3.0 out of 5 stars Okay SF, but not top shelf
The "Conqueror"-trilogy is okay, if you are really doped out by overwork or illness. Obviously the entire trilogy could be condensed into a single book at less than the length of one of its parts. That is not the way the world works. From a commercial point of view it pays more to produce three separate books. I guess I cannot fault Zahn for going for the big...

5.0 out of 5 stars About the trilogy - I actually found myself THERE, May 11, 2000
I was surprised to read some negative reviews about one or more book of the trilogy: Conquerors' Pride, Heritage and Legacy. The first book is narrated from an almost exclusively human viewpoint. The second book shows things from the alien viewpoint and Zahn uses it to develop on the alien culture, and you realize in the end that they have worries and interests just like us. In the third book humans and aliens finally make contact and so Zahn goes back and forth between aliens and humans. I think that Zahn did a very good job at developing the story in this way. It's tough to write an entire book only on an alien species' viewpoint, and Zahn should be given credit for this. I think he did such a good job because while I was reading I often built such a clear mental picture of the scenes that I felt as if I were there myself! (And sometimes wished I HAD been). When I finished the first book, I had to wait for months - and suffered terribly - before the second one came out, and so it went for the third. The bottom line is this: in the science fiction genre, if you like suspense, adventure, space battles, and if you like to read about aliens, "good" or "bad" as they may be, then you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Zahn is now my second favorite author behind Asimov, July 25, 1998

I was thouroughly impressed with Zahn's three Star Wars novels, so I went looking for more of his work on sci-fi. I found "Conquerors' Pride" and enjoyed it. I had to wait an eternity for the next book "Conquerors' Heritage" but it was worth the wait. I had to wait another eternity for "Conquerors' Legacy" to come out, but it was even better than the first two books in the series. Zahn is a master at writing from different points of view. The subtle little things that make a day go wrong or go right are explored from both sides. Sometimes luck is a factor, and sometimes naivete is a greater factor. I look forward to more of Zahn's works, and I recomend that anyone into sci-fi read his books. (and Mr. Zahn, if you read this, thank you for the many hours of enjoyment you have given me) : )

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm Just Sorry It's Over, August 18, 2000
I really liked this book. I beat my mom to reading it luckily, and it was really great. The first one I really liked and same with the seconed, but this might just be the best of the three. It includes all of the characters from both books, so instead of just haaving one species P.O.V. on the story, you get both, and everyone you want from both. I found the story exciting, and parts of it funny, and I would recommend it to people, especially if they are sciencefiction lovers.

5.0 out of 5 stars and the story ends...but does it !!, June 9, 1998
By A Customer
This is the conclusion to the story of the Zhirrzh and the Human conflict and after the first two book I was really looking forwards to finding out what happens, and I wasn't dissapointed. The first book was written from the Human point of view, the second book from the Zhirrzh, this book is written from both, and written superbly. This whole book is mainly a race against time to get both sides of the war to form a peace because the war was a big mistake in the first place. I had one complaint though, although the book was brilliant, the ending was a bit of a let down, but I wouldn't have been able to do any better myself. All in all, a brilliant book, and a brilliant trilogy...

5.0 out of 5 stars An interspecies war started by a misunderstanding...., August 5, 1996
By A Customer
This book was an awesome conclusion to a great trilogy. In the first book of the trilogy, Zahn told the story from the human point of view. In the second, he switched to the aliens'. In the conclusion, he uses both to create a great story. The war started when spacecraft belonging to an unknown alien race attacked a human task force, unprovoked. Yet the war was based on a misunderstanding. Members of both the alien and human species have become aware of this-- but can they get the information to their governments in time to stop a full-scale interstellar holocaust?

4.0 out of 5 stars Unique in its own way, October 26, 1999
Yeah, we've all read alien invasion books before, and yeah, Zahn has a tendancy to blur his character's personalities together, but these books offer much more than just that. The whole idea of a multi-perspective war is really cool, in my opinion, especially the way it started. I also like how Zahn generally only deals with politicians and strategists. It gives a great intelligent feel to his books that I enjoy reading. If you haven't read his 5 Star Wars books, I highly recommend them.

Pride was exciting, and Heritage was a really good transition. This last episode was one heck of a continuation. I only wish there was more...

4.0 out of 5 stars Frenetic Conclusion, August 26, 2011
By
Judah (Terre Haute In USA) - See all my reviews
While I wasn't a fan of the earlier two novels in the Conqueror's series, Legacy is better than both of them. Scenes are actually exciting, and characters are genuinely developed beyond the point of 'talking heads'. Took three novels for actual character development (though the Zhirrizh are still mostly cut from the same mold). It also took three novels for interesting science (part of *science* fiction) in the hull resonance shattering side-plot.

Unlike the other two books in the series, I am satisfied it's good science fiction. Zahn better balances politics and action in book three; the first two volumes contained long dull sections. High point for me was a major space-war engagement, fleet to fleet, in a foreign solar system.

I don't think "Conquerors" is one of the greatest science fiction trilogies. (Liked Zahn's Star Wars "Heir to the Empire" Trilogy more.) The conclusion is conclusive, though abrupt -- seemed like Zahn was hitting his page count limit and he rushed it. Personally wouldn't recommend these books, but I do understand how people who love alien political systems and intrigue heavy space opera would be drawn to them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast paced and exciting!, April 5, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Once again, Timothy Zahn has created a masterpiece. In this final book in the Conquerors Saga, he manages to put all the pieces of the puzzle together in a dazzling display of fast-paced adventure. Where the first two books focused on the point of view of one of two cultures involved in the plot, this book brings everything together by involving several different points of view, cultures, and characters. The result is a fast-paced adventure that is sure to keep you on your toes up to the last page.
