Product Description

Conquest of the Crystal Palace United States NTSC © 1990, Asmik - Action - 1 Player - Licensed turn autoplay off Long ago the Crystal Palace was a thriving kingdom, however the evil war spirit Zaras appeared one day and brought destruction to the lands! The people of the Crystal Palace left as Zaras and his henchman took over, changing the kingdom into a maze of many dangers. You control Farron, the hero of the story who needs to enter the Crystal Palace and destroy the bad guys in order to restore peace. The game is an action platform game that scrolls both horizontally and vertically. On each of five stages you'll need to fight various enemies throughout the varied terrain, and finally defeat the boss at the end. You'll start with just a simple sword, but additional weapons can be found or bought in order to help you out. If you get into trouble, you can also call your dog Zap onto the screen; he'll jump around causing damage to the enemies giving you a chance to escape. You may also come across Kim's shops along your journey. Here you can buy various items, including additional lives, replenish your health, more powerful weapons, and other useful items. To purchase items, you'll need money which can be collected after defeating enemies in battle.

Why was this game not popular? I think it must have been the box art! I randomly played this gem on an emulator recently, and it was so good that I bought the cartridge!

Conquest of the Crystal Palace is an above-average sword-slashing platform game. You control a Prince who, with his dog, is storming his family's former home to take it back from some bad guys.

The gameplay is unique in that you can call your dog into battle at any time to help you fight the demons and zombies and birds. The controls are fairly solid. The difficulty is pretty well balanced, although the 2nd level seems to be quite a bit more challenging than levels 3 or 4.

The story is progressed through a series of encounters with a girl named Kim (who also sells you weapons and items). While you are shopping, she dresses as a news reporter and gives you a special report on the scenario (or the weather...). It's kind of bizarre, and pretty funny.

Overall, the game has a rather whimsical vibe to it. The box art is in no way reminiscent of the game's style. The graphics are all fairly cute, and the music is upbeat with an eastern melody.

If you like to play old NES platformers, this one is a rare treat for 50 cents or so on Amazon. Do yourself a favor and grab a copy.
