Caesar was pretty good, apparently (according to him),

As with his 'Civil War', Caesar in 'The Conquest of Gaul' is a lively and relatively objective read, although not surprisingly any setbacks are either glossed over or clearly the fault of irresolute or disobedient subordinates. While an accessible, entertaining and informative narrative in its own right, the broad principles behind Caesar's decisions and conduct of operations, as well as his dealings with Gallic leaders and populations are worth considering by anybody with a professional interest in modern military operations.
(Disclaimer: While he appears remarkably enlightened for his era, quite a few of Caesar's COIN measures are a little robust for today, to say the least!)
