Practical solutions to your teaching problems.,
By newgdolyn "newgdolyn" (San Francisco, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Conscious Classroom Management: Unlocking the Secrets of Great Teaching (Paperback)
Unlike some books on discipline, Smith gives practical solutions to your teaching problems. He tells you what to do to make classroom discipline effortless. When I was observing teachers, I didn't know what to look for because the classes ran smoothly. Smith tells you what good teachers do that seem invisible but in fact make a large difference in how your class runs. I highly recommend this book to those who are lost about classroom management.

Great Book for Teachers at every age,

This review is from: Conscious Classroom Management: Unlocking the Secrets of Great Teaching (Paperback)
I've taught for 35 years and I learned dozens of practical techniques and ideas for classroom management from Rick Smith's book and had many ideas reinforced and strengthened. I don't see how a beginning teacher can succeed without help like this and we oldsters can still learn a trick or two.
The kids are worth the effort. There are no perfect jobs: my definition of a perfect job is one where you have more good days than bad. Teaching kids is very rewarding and Rick Smith's book can help make it more enjoyable and less stressful. By making the invisible management techniques of master teachers visible, Mr. Smith gives hope to the future of teaching.

A must read for both new teachers and veteran teachers,
This review is from: Conscious Classroom Management: Unlocking the Secrets of Great Teaching (Paperback)
This book is by far the best out there for classroom management and how it ties to instructional practice. In clear and practical terms, Rick explains the classroom management strategies and procedures teachers can use to spend a lot more time teaching and a lot less time managing off-task student behaviors. The book is also fun and entertaining to read! I know dozens of teachers who now swear by Rick's approach.

Smith's book contains hundreds of practical, usable organizational ideas for the classroom. I've taught junior high and high school for many years and still found several nuggets I can't wait to try.

This is probably the most useful work on classroom management I have ever encountered. Rick Smith's approach avoids the tedious philosophies of which I saw so much in university and gives a simple, practical view that puts the teacher in charge of the classroom, complete with plenty of ideas on how to respectfully treat kids. This does not spoil the kids but still assumes the best of them, as Smith so often puts it. The book is well-organized by topic and full of examples and ideas that still allow for personal taste and touch. Great book all teachers should read.

The Best Book on Classroom Management/Organization,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Conscious Classroom Management: Unlocking the Secrets of Great Teaching (Paperback)
This book is the best resource to understanding classroom management...there is no magic peel, or recipe to follow. It begins with you, the teacher. It starts with deciding what kind of classroom do you desire to have and Teach your students how to create it. I would add Rick Smith provides other information about planning, organizing, and evaluating all the components necessary for effective teaching & classroom preparation as well. Get this book...it will help your novice and veteran teaching staff improve their practice.

Excellent resource for new and returning educators,
This review is from: Conscious Classroom Management: Unlocking the Secrets of Great Teaching (Paperback)
Regardless the time you've spent in a classroom, it can help to refresh what and how you manage your students, yourself, and your room. This book was helpful in pulling ideas as I wanted them, in an accessible format, and then implement them in my room. The author spoke at one of my BTSA meetings and said he envisioned it as a book read in the bathroom -- in parts, not necessarily chronologically. Perfect approach.

Stuff You Can Use,

This review is from: Conscious Classroom Management: Unlocking the Secrets of Great Teaching (Paperback)
I received a copy of this book while undergoing BTSA training. At first, I didn't pay that much attention to the book, but lately I have found the book to be very practical and straightforward. I've been using it to double check current management practices and to improve in others.
The book is very well organized, and a teacher can look at the index and find some kind of solution to some pertinent problem. Get this book, and get advice about "Phil the Baiter", "anger versus reactivity", "The firm but soft paradox", and many other issues that face teachers. As a teacher, I recommend this book!
