Editorial Reviews

Review

"If you have observed the subtle, completing forces of nature steadily withdrawing from the land and our food in response to relentless waves of industrial synthetics and poisons, then this book will guide you in finding honest ways of bringing them back in their essential, nurturing goodness. Conscious Food is a banquet of agrarian insight."
-- Steven McFadden, author of The Call of the Land: An Agrarian Primer for the 21st Century, co-author of Farms of Tomorrow

"Conscious Food reminds us, eloquently and plainly, that even our daily bread is a sacrament. In its growing, in its cooking and in its eating, food deserves our honor and respect. Ewing thoroughly explores the reasons why our contemporary 'Industrial Food' system is broken, and then tells us how to mend our relationship with the earth and soil that nourish us - through careful growing practices, spiritual awakening, and mindfulness."
-- Robin Mather, senior editor, Mother Earth News, author of The Feast Nearby

In our current times more and more books about holistic living are being published. Too many of the authors have the theory of wholeness, yet disconnect the subject matter of their books. This is an error that Jim Pathfinder Ewing has avoided as he skilfully blends the ingredients of the land, the culture of the land, the growing of food and its consumption into one seamless whole. This is the way of a writer to whom a holistic way of life is a reality, rather than a theory. I thoroughly recommend this book and its valuable insights.
-- Michael J. RoadsConscious Gardening

"The world has less connection to its agriculture than ever before. Conscious Food: Sustainable Growing, Spiritual Eating is a blend of spiritual health and eating and gardening from Jim Pathfinder Ewing as he criticizes many modern farming methods and encourages a more spiritual approach to gardening..... A spiritual and metaphysical approach to organic gardening, Conscious Food is a valuable alternative take on gardening and agriculture."
-- Midwest Book Review

"Jim PathFinder is a competent guide through the realm of the miraculous, putting us deeply in touch with our selves."  —Rowan Storm, musician and educator

"From his heart he shares what our ancestors have lived since the beginning of time: to be one with our Mother Earth and to heal each other."  —Melynda Ruckels, faculty member, the Ritberger Institute

"[This] knowledgeable man manages to impart his wisdom in a manner that is beautifully clear and concise."  —Sandi Sedgbeer, editor, PlanetLightworker magazine

"Jim is a voice for the Earth, giving us much needed inspiration and information about living in harmony. . . . A marvelous guide."  —Brooke Medicine Eagle, author, Buffalo Woman Comes Singing

"Jim Ewing writes with deep compassion and love."  —Sandra Ingerman, author, How to Heal Toxic Thoughts

"Jim Pathfinder Ewing skilfully blends the ingredients of the land, the culture of the land, the growing of food and its consumption into one seamless whole. This is the way of a writer to whom a holistic way of life is a reality, rather than a theory." —Michael J. Roads, author, Conscious Gardening

It was thousands of years ago, as civilization emerged and societies formed by humans strengthened, that our connection to the food we eat began to weaken. Now there is a movement afoot to reclaim that connection. Sometimes called eco-spirituality, sometimes called spiritual ecology, increasing numbers of people are concerned about how their food is grown and how that growing process affects the earth.

Jim Ewing takes us through the history of agriculture on planet earth. He shows us where we lost sight of the interconnectedness of all our human activities, and where that interconnectedness was properly attended to. The book contains a wealth of information both practical and spiritual as he makes the case for returning to a mutually-nurturing model for society's use of earth's resources.

Ewing practices what he preaches, living on a small farm with his wife, as he works for change in the food industry. Everything you'll want to know about putting the spirit back into dinner can be found within the pages of this book. It is a call to action, backed up by real-world information and ideas. It's a valuable addition to any reference library, and will live happily on your kitchen shelf next to the cookbooks.

I love Jim's books, in his own words they are "a series of tools that can help us reconnect to our natural selves". His newest book "Conscious Food; Sustainable Growing, Spiritual Eating" is no exception.

But in order to grasp the ideas of consciously reconnecting with our relationship to "food", it's helpful to first take a look back at when and how we became disconnected in the first place. Not to worry, Jim has done his homework once again making it that much easier for the average person like myself to access a plethora of knowledge on the subject at every turn of a page!

"Conscious Food" is an amazing enlightenment of a history lesson that details not only how `agriculture' and ultimately our food sources have been mechanically, genetically and chemically modified and altered over the years, but also poses the question as to how many of us actually stop and relate to our food each day?

Spirit food for thought: If we are what we eat and if food is what sustains us and nourishes us, then why are there staggering numbers of people suffering with health issues such as obesity, diabetes, food allergies and astounding cases of autism and learning disabilities in our children?

After unveiling both the historical and present day truths, Jim offers simple ways of how we can reconnect by sharing his expansive knowledge of growing practices and reminding us of the importance of being mindful; a spiritual practice and perspective tantamount in any situation that fosters "growth".

"When we unite the two in consciousness" says Jim, "only then can we see the whole- ness of life".

This book contains all the pieces of the ag/organic puzzle - and one need not be an expert to snap these pieces into place.

Jim Ewing escorts readers through some of the most timely issues of this era. Food is central to our culture and yet we are so removed from its sources, both physically and metaphysically. There are very few authors who can take westerners on a leap into the spiritual realm like this one. I highly recommend it.

This book comes timely, in the Christmas Season, when we sit down to multiple feasts and parties with goodies and delights with friends and family and not too often are aware of sustenance and its meaning and spirit. I have a special place on my bookshelf for them. All of his books have led me to important discoveries about the inner working of life and life-changing knowledge. I've shared his books with many of the people I care about knowing that they will have a beneficial influence on their lives. I've just cracked the first page so I can't write a full review, but I can tell already its going to be commensurate with Jim's other books... More coming later...
