Very Disappointed.,

After listened to the samples of the songs I was not that excited about the music. I still purchase this CD anyway based on Amazon reviewers that gave rave remarks. I thought maybe there was much more to this music than the samples would allow me to hear, so I purchased it and was very disappointed. Every song sounds the same, showing no creativity.I should have just listened to the samples to make my decission and never made the purchase.

DISAPPOINTMENT!!,

I purchased this CD for my girlfriend who loves neo-soul and we both disliked this CD. The songs are flat and not well delivered. I went on the advice of positive reviews which was a mistake because I should have also read the negative reviews before making my purchase. I would recommend Ledisi-Lost & Found, she has a song entitled "In the Morning" a real chart making hit for neo-soul. All tracks on that CD are excellent.

I listened to "Piece of Mind" religiously for almost two years. It never left my disc changer. "Concious" has two or three notable songs. But it does not have the consistency of "Piece of Mind." She seems to be aiming for commercial success. She does not take as many risks with this one and there is too much filler.

I've been listening to Julie since "Peace of Mind". I thank Amazon.com for being the place to get stuff that you can't get anywhere else. They recommended Julie to me and they knew what they were talking about. This CD is somewhat different from the two previous releases. This one like another reviewer sounds like a loungy, downtempo set. Which is fine by me! It definitely have you thinking after you hear her lyrics. Deep and insightful, she really comes through on this one. "Look who's got your back" is a song that reminds you of friends in your life that are there to help you when you need them most. It sounds like an early 90s song, but it really sounds good! This song really hit me when she was singing about God. Saying "He's waiting to talk to you." The way she really sung that really grabbed me. "Show me now" is another great song. In which Julie and her guest put forth a memorable duet. "Choices" is another great song. In fact, there isn't a bad song on this CD, it just so happens that those three are my favorites. Jazzy, soulful and spiritual. This CD says what I feel. Thanks Julie!

Conscious R&B In An Unconscious Music Industry,
By

I had high expectations after waiting so long since Julie Dexter's wonderful sophomore LP "Dexterity", to the point of downloading mp3s from the new album "Conscious" before a copy was available. From hearing "Choices", the opening track, I knew her latest CD was worth the 3 years wait. Like her previous albums, "Peace of Mind" and "Dexterity" (which I also recommend), she further explores her reggae roots, yet maintains her distinctive soulful, jazz 'n' funk sound. Some remarkable songs include an opposite's attract heart-clencher "Like Ours", and "Show Me Now" - a beckoning slow groove with a seductive flute in the background. It all unwinds with "Rain Song", a jazzy, lazy Sunday afternoon track. Overall, the neo-soul grooves and meditations of "Conscious" make me wonder why many people remain unconscious regarding Ms. Dexter. This CD is higly recommended for R&B, reggae, and neo-soul lovers, hip-hop heads, and even jazz purists. Ketch a vibe and enjoy.

Soulful and Relaxing,

I first heard this CD at a novelty store in DC and liked it. It was recommended by the owner of the shop and I couldn't refuse it. This is the first time I am listening to her sing since I bought it. While I am doing my homework, I find her voice very soothing to my body, mind, and soul. I feel collective and confident that I will get a good grade on the paper I'm doing. Julie Dexter being popular in the UK market, also has a fan base in the US. Artists that appreciate neo-soul should get this CD. It is really great to listen to.

ah, i miss the jazzish, reggae-influence of her 'peace of mind' EP... that's a classic; dont think she'll ever top that for me. (still havent heard 'dexterity' yet... no local retailers have carried it and i've been too damnlazy to order it from my wish list)but this is pretty good... damngood, if you ask me. i really caint say that this is more in the vein of mainstream RnB... has more of a downtempo lounge feel to me, like, let's say you got to your favorite downtown hang out EARLY... before it got crowded and smokey and full of nearly-inebriated patrons... this might sound like her full-dressed rehearsal as lil sista prepared to storm the stage later in the night... but definitely, julie is the most consistant sounding soul sista (as far as these underground lounge divas go) than any of her contemporaries... if you liked her before, you still will. and if you havent heard of her yet, then go getchu some 'peace of mind' first and 12 months from now, when you get down playin it, go back out and get this thang herre.

CONSCIOUS by Julie Dexter was a very big dissappointment. It was my first CD by this artist and might just be the last. This is one of the CD's you buy and listen to it and then set it aside for your next yard sale. There is just nothing special here.

As good as the first album, and more straight-ahead,
By
This review is from: Conscious (Audio CD)
This is her second album and it's as consistently pleasing as the first. It's more of a straight-up R&B record than her reggae-tinged first record, and her chops are still top-notch. If you like caron Wheeler and Amel Larrieux, this record is a must-own. She's the next logical extension of Wheeler, and both of her albums make Amel's second album - "Bravebird" - sound lifeless (which it mostly is). Get this record yesterday.
