Editorial Reviews

Review

In Consequences Of Growing Up Poor presents developmental psychologists, economists, and sociologists addressing specific questions about how low income puts children at risk intellectually, emotionally and physically. These contributors demonstrate that although income clearly creates disadvantages, it does so selectively and in a wide variety of ways. Consequences Of Growing Up Poor also investigates whether such family conditions as the marital status, education, and involvement of parents mitigate the ill effects of poverty. Based on their findings , these editors and contributors recommend more sharply focused child welfare policies targeted at specific areas and conditions of poor children's lives. They also weigh the relative need for income supplements, child care subsidies, and home interventions. Consequences Of Growing Up Poor is an important contribution to the ongoing national dialogue on welfare reform, educational reform, the impact of poverty on the transmission of family values and much more! -- Midwest Book Review --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars The importance of income on child well-being: A great intro, March 11, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Consequences of Growing Up Poor (Paperback)
This book is a must read for any serious student of social policy in America. Written by some of the most accomplished social scientists in their respective fields, this book addresses many of the various underlying forces that may or may not moderate the effects of poverty on child well-being. Additionally, factors such as the duration and timing of poverty are also addressed. I reference this book frequently.

2.0 out of 5 stars Dry statistics aren't the way to evoke compassion, October 25, 1998
By A Customer
While this is a useful tool to use to reject conservative ideas that everyone has an equal shot, dry statistics don't bring about compassion. And what is needed in this issue is just that.
