Book Description

Are we living in challenging times? Yes. But people can and do make a difference.

Here are the stories of fifteen entrepreneurial leaders doing just that. Drawn from church, business, government and non-profit sectors, these world-class visionaries and activists offer examples that motivate and principles to imitate.

Their stories show that mature networks of leaders and organizations can offer opportunities to a new generation of young people, change communities ravaged by HIV/AIDS, reach new groups of people with the message of hope--and more.

If you see a need and want to contribute your own consequential leadership, this book is for you.

"Consequential Leadership is an important read for leaders who want to make a world-changing difference for God. The leaders in the book and their stories have literally changed the trajectory of communities, cities and nations." (Dr. Floyd Flake, senior pastor, The Greater Allen AME Cathedral of New York )

"Great leaders are as interested in significance as they are in success. In Consequential Leadership, Mac Pier profiles fifteen leaders we all want to emulate--great names including W. Wilson Goode Sr., Frances Hesselbein, Luis Palau and Richard Stearns. All are servant leaders whose lives are committed to giving back, locally as well as globally. They are activists, preachers and CEOs. They have created foundations, planted churches, furthered the cause of peace and improved the lives of thousands of people. Read this book--it will inspire you to open your world and become a leader of consequence." (Ken Blanchard, coauthor of The One Minute Manager® and Great Leaders Grow )

"The God-stories contained in these biographical sketches will encourage you to see and embrace the God-story of your life." (D. G. Elmore, Chairman, Board of Directors, The Navigators; Chairman, Elmore Companies, Inc. )

"Consequential Leadership forces us to look inward to find the strength to lead courageously. It moves us to look outward on the plight of society and act with biblical compassion. And it inspires us to look upward in prayer for God's empowering presence. Mac Pier has done it again!" (David D. Ireland, author of The Skin You Live In )

"Leadership matters. The leaders in this book have made an extraordinary difference in their churches, communities and cities. I applaud their impact and invite you to read this book and discover your own leadership assignment." (Rev. Bill Hybels, Chairman & Founder, Willow Creek Association )

"This book is a study of what has already taken place through several consequential leaders, but it is also a challenge to every Christ-follower to continue and multiply that work." (From the afterword by Kevin Palau, president, Luis Palau Association )

"In Consequential Leadership, Mac Pier has done us a great service by bringing forth the stories of great entrepreneurs who have crossed over from politics, business and other fields to form a vanguard that may yet bring us back from what the ever-wise David Brooks calls 'a crisis of legitimacy.' These tales are a call to action for all of us." (From the foreword by Bob Buford, author of Halftime )

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical and Challenging March 12, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Mac Pier in this book does two very significant things. He first provides us with a glimpse of how God has, and continues to work, in people's lives through people, experiences, and a person's choice to respond and follow God's leading. He does this through concrete examples of servant leaders in various areas of leadership. Next, he identifies areas where not only these leaders have gone, but where God calls each of us to step bravely out and seek reconciliation, unity and justice. This book is a very valuable resource to see concrete examples of people using their gifts and abilities to pursue a life well lived, and provides a challenge to the reader on where she/he will seek to, by faith, steward their talents to maximize their influence and impact in cities and other circles by serving boldly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Consequential Leadership March 16, 2013
Leadership continues to be a popular focus of study in the business world and in the church. Leadership conferences like TED, Catalyst, and the Global Leadership Summit are attended by tens of thousands of leaders hoping to improve their capacity to lead in both the for profit and not-for-profit worlds. Mac Pier's Consequential Leadership is a grand addition to this leadership momentum that we are experiencing as a culture. Pier highlights the leadership stories of fifteen different leaders in various capacities but with the united vision of fighting for cities.

Pier's own leadership history has included significant roles with InterVarsity (Urbana), the International Concert of Prayer and the New York City Leadership Center. In addition to his own giftings and abilities, Pier counseled with some of the most influential Christian leaders of our time, including: George Gallup, Tim Keller, Luis Palau, Richard Stearns, and Brenda Salter McNeil. Each chapter highlights the story of one of these leaders, their contributions as well as their learnings. In essence, the reader is introduced to the leader and given a glimpse into their life and their values. It's a sneak peak into what has defined each leader and why the reader may want to explore further their works (books, articles, speaking engagements) and their particular focus.

While it would be impossible to do justice to each of the fifteen people interviewed and highlighted in the book, I would like to introduce you to a couple of my new leadership heroes: Frances Hesselbein and Wilson Goode. Both of these individuals were new to me and have already taught me much about leadership.

Frances Hesselbein's motto in life is: To serve is to live.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating Words of Inspiration August 15, 2012
In Consequential Leadership, Mac Pier makes his heroes ours. With our society's glorification of marketable athletes, film stars and musicians, those truly worthy of the label "idol" all too often fly well under the radar. Consequential Leadership provides us with the historical and biographical perspectives of men and women deserving our attention, respect, and yes, awe. Whether from humble beginnings or more privileged status, the fifteen leaders Dr. Pier so vividly introduces to us, all take social entrepreneurship, charity, and motivational skills to the highest possible level. Their invidividual and collective success are a culmination of their unfaltering beliefs that how they choose to live their lives can in every way positively impact society.
Mac Pier weaves biographical sketches of a diverse group of powerful and influential leaders into a literary cloth that wraps us up in thought and admiration and, hopefully, keeps us pondering how we might just make a difference in our own every day lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book on Leadership July 1, 2012
Theoretical books on leadership are valuable. They allow us to face our presuppositions, our patterns and practices. They help us to see where we are weak and give us new ideas to face the current challenges. But, I think theoretical books on leadership have a limited value. They might help me understand and approach my situation, but they cannot help me do. That's why we all need coaches and mentors. Every Timothy needs a Paul. Mac Pier also understands the value of personal interaction. He speaks in the Introduction to Consequential Leadership of those who helped influence and shape him as a leader. He has written this book in order to give us a window into the lives, ministries and practices of important, contemporary leaders.

He examines the lives, ministries and influence of key leaders in ministry, business, politics and non-profit areas. Pier then highlights a key idea or theme for each leader and explains how it is incorporated into everything that they do. For Tim Keller the theme is grace. Keller goes to great effort to show how the grace of God in Christ is better. Every sermon is infused with grace. Luis Palau's theme is Festival! Pier explores how this renown evangelist has been working to share the gospel of Christ all over the world - and how he has been successful at it. Each person in this book is an example to the rest of us. They provide a window into their life and work that gives us perspective and anticipation.

The purpose of this book is not to simply profile these different leaders. That would be interesting but of little value. Instead, it is meant to be an expose on leadership with a wake. These are leaders who are making waves across the globe. Theirs is an encouragement that God can use anyone anywhere to do tremendous things. It is also a call to pursue this kind of leadership in whatever context we may find ourselves. These fifteen men do not compose an exclusive club - more should be added (and could be).
