More About the Author


Douglas Carl Abrams is a professor of history and chair of the Department of Social Studies Education at Bob Jones University. He earned his PhD in history from the University of Maryland at College Park. Abrams has written two books: Conservative Constraints: North Carolina and the New Deal and Selling the Old-Time Religion: American Fundamentalists and Mass Culture, 1920-1940.

In addition to political and religious history, he enjoys Africa, where he has spent several summers working with American university students and nationals. A French minor in college, he also loves spending time in France during the summer. Beyond African and French culture, interests also include evangelical missions, reading, classical music, classic films, and hiking.

Conservative constraints explains how conservative Democrats in NC deliberately sabotaged Roosevelt's New Deal in order to benefit big business and big agriculture. It's happening again on the national level with "Blue Dog" Democrats joining Republicans in fighting policies that would benefit middle- and low-income workers.
