Book Description

September 15, 1995 1856492761 978-1856492768
Viewing the way of life in rich countries as unsustainable, this book looks at the forms a sustainable society might take. It shows that practical and attractive alternatives exist and that, although the transition to an ecologically sustainable and just world must involve huge changes, it could yield a higher quality of life than most people, North and South, currently experience. The book outlines the viable alternatives available regarding housing, food production, energy, the design of settlements, the development of a new economy and the shift to new values. It emphasizes throughout that the essential principles for sustainability must be more materially-simple living standards and small-scale, self-sufficient local economies. The author also discusses actual examples of alternative communities, and offers a strategy for people to begin moving their own localities in that direction.

5.0 out of 5 stars TRAINER IS GOD - FEAR THE BOWLERS, October 30, 2000
This review is from: The Conserver Society: Alternatives for Sustainability (Paperback)
Trainer discusses in an intelligent manner how De-Dev solves for war, human life, and other problems that are entirely due to our unjust economic system. Trainer argues that education can solve, and certainly he is correct.

5.0 out of 5 stars Growth is the root of our problems, De-dev solves, December 15, 1999
This review is from: The Conserver Society: Alternatives for Sustainability (Paperback)
Economic Growth is fundamentally flawed and is the cause of all our current problems. War, famine, poverty, enviromental destruction and resource depletion are due almost entirely to our unjust economic system. Trainer is a God.

1.0 out of 5 stars de-develop and die, February 24, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Conserver Society: Alternatives for Sustainability (Paperback)
Most of the claims that Trainer makes are completley ridiculous. To think that a major metropolitan area could ever be undeveloped in ridiculous. And the massive global economic shock that it would take to realize the need to stop developement would spark conflicts and the rearangin of the entire global power structure.
