This cd has it all: Wopat's smoky, husky soulful voice and wonderful interpretations; great arrangements-almost a big band sound in some of the horn arrangements. Lot of great guitar work. Unexpected song choices. (Spinning wheel; ode to billie joe--both kick ass). His cover of joni's Grey rooms is gorgeous, and beautiful piano accompaniment (altho I'd rather hear wayne shorter noodling in the background than malach's uninspired contribution on that tune) wopat's only original tune, thailand sea, sounds like it couldve been written by joni (but hell, you could have worse influences). His treatment of frischberg*'s you'd rather have the blues sounds like he's channeling sammy davis jr with top notes of mel torme. One of my faves is cover of deacon blues. But you could play that on tuba and I'd like it. Seriously, he does a nice job with the lyrics. Conveys a pathos in the song I never felt before. The horn section in the background playing those sweet steely dan chords is a treat And in the penultimate line, joni creeps in. "50 checks" I always skip. 42nd st is a pretty interesting take on that classic; will make you pine for the days before madam tussaud, the creamery, skechers and that travesty of a blues club, bb kings. Natural Man is no Like a Natural Woman but tom does the, like the song says, the best he can. The last tune, "The last night of the year" is a poignant ballad, beautifuuly sung, albeit not swung. If he did a whole album of songs like that, I'd snap it up.

I bought this as a gift for my husband. I try to find music he doesn't already have on cd which means I guess at what he might enjoy but is not necessarily familiar with. We both have come to appreciate different styles of music, but especially the pre-rock n roll big band era--what great music! We heard it growing up, but didn't appreciate it--that was for our parents, old people, and us baby boomers were partial to NEW, DIFFERENT, YOUNG. Never trust anyone over 30, and so forth.....now we realize what great music our parents' listened to.

Have to admit that I'm a Tom Wopan fan. I have several of his previous CD's.
I love "Consider it Swing". Tom reads lyrics with intelligence and meaning. Some great fresh material song choices. Congrats to the label for putting this out.

My first exposure to Tom's voice was recent, when I saw him live on stage starring in "Will Rogers Follies". He was completely in character and so charming, but it was my first time hearing him sing. That warm baritone with sensitive vibrato was so pleasant to listen to. He offered to stay afterwards and sign CDs in the lobby, which I wish we'd had time to do, to meet him, but we couldn't. Instead I ordered online.
To this review, you get some of his stage presence here, but for me not enough. And maybe I was spoiled hearing him first in a wide open setting. This is in studio, and more subdued. The selections are varied, with some interesting takes on known classics.
I hope he does a Broadway album; he has numerous credits. His rendition of "Never Met A Man I Didn't Like" from WRF left no dry eyes, and I'd love to hear it over and over.

Have listened to a song from this album on a local radio station and finally learned who was singing. You Fascinate Me So is a gem and the rest are wonderful, too. Love it. Bought the cd, downloaded the album onto my new Kindle, can't get enough. Great arrangements and a great voice!!

I tripped over a song called "50 Checks" on a free MP3 album called "Allegro Summer 2011 Sampler" and was blown away by how great a singer this guy is. This album is outstanding and 5 of the songs are now on my favorite playlist. If you have not heard Tom sing, check out what he does to "Deacon Blues," and "Maybe Someday Baby" - it's magic. He could have been a student of Sinatra or Bennett...
