If I had only a handful (or even just one) CD to take with me to a desert island, this one would be it. The viola da gamba playing on this CD is stellar, though if you listen closely, you can hear that it is also highly edited. But that does not diminish the absolute aching beauty of this CD and its gorgeous music.
Also check out Hesperion XX's recordings of Christopher Tye, and another all-time fave, Johann Rosenmueller. Hesperion XX is a class act, at the absolute top of its field. I buy ANYTHING by Savall and Hesperion XX sight unseen and am rarely, if ever, unsatisified. I am a professional singer and massage therapist, and I use these CDs in my therapeutic sessions. I never tire of hearing them.

The great body of chamber music known as English consort music that is little by little unfolding itself before our eyes as the first generation of musician-interpreters to really grasp the essence of the music (building on the achievements of previous early musicians of course) is beginning to impose itself on us as a towering achievement completely throwing the next great body of (Viennese) chamber music into a different perspective. Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and their followers had no inkling of English consort music, the scores long buried in dusty shelves, boxes and closets, who knows how much of which was destroyed or lost and how lucky we are to have what does survive; they would have been forced to take this music seriously and who knows how it might have altered their musical universe?

Look backwards, not forwards, from Purcell, and start building up a new cd collection: Christopher Simpson, Matthew Locke, John Jenkins, William Lawes, John Dowland, and others (not to mention the wealth of contemporary music from the Continent). Jordi Savall and Hesperion are simply the finest interpreters of viol music around today and let's hope they have many more recordings planned. For a while their version of the Lawes' 5 and 6-part consort sets was at the top of my list, but their reading of the Jenkins 6-part consort music grew on me inexorably until it now stands securely as the single most beautiful recording of my 2,000 cds and records of classical music from all centuries. I understand Jenkins was quite prolific so we are only at the beginning of a recording adventure.
