For young readers only., November 16, 1999

This review is from: For Conspicuous Gallantry...: Winners of the Medal of Honor (Hardcover)
"For Conspicuous Gallantry" is a good introduction for young readers to the Medal of Honor and to some of the decoration's receipient through most major conflicts. Well-illustrated, it will hold the interest of younger history buffs, but it is not comprehensive at all. Cooke chooses a few stories from each major conflict the US was involved in to provide a backdrop for the Medal's history. If you're looking for a complete history of the Medal and background on all of its receipients, steer clear of this book.

A BRIEF SURVEY FOR THE YOUNG READER. Adult readers...read this review before you purchas this work., December 25, 2010
This review is from: For Conspicuous Gallantry...: Winners of the Medal of Honor (Hardcover)
Before you order this work; before you spend your hard earned cash, please note that this is a work targeted toward young readers. It is not a children's book per se, but rather one that a middle school or early high school young man or woman might find interesting and informative. It is an introduction; a survey, if you will, of the history of our countries highest honor for gallantry, the Medical of Honor.
The author has written, from researching citations and after action reports, the story of several men (and the only woman), who received this award. Each conflict this nation has been involved in, starting with the Civil War through the Viet Nam war is represented. Each recipient's battle story is told in as much details as the author can manage with the information at hand.
Conflicts and wars covered here include the Civil War, Korean Campaign, Indian Campaigns, Boxer Rebellion, Philippine Insurrection, Philippine Action, World War I, Haitian Campaign, Second Nicaraguan Campaign, World War II, Korean Conflict, and Vietnam Conflict. The author completes the work with a number of Medical of Honor Oddities, including the odd case of the one female recipient and the Medical's later withdrawal.
The book includes numerous illustrations and very nice little maps showing where the action being addressed took place.
The book of course gives a good profile of the brave men who were honored, but the reader is also dealt a good bit of our history via the use of subtle side notes buried in the text. If you asked the average high school senior today to tell you something of the Second Nicaraguan Campaign or the Philippine Insurrection, you most likely will get a blank stare...of course you will bet the same thing if you mention WWI or WWII or Viet Nam, but not quite as many of them.
All in all, this is a good read for the younger reader who has an interest in such matters. I do not recommend this read for those that have a working knowledge of this field.
