5.0 out of 5 stars The Gentle Art of Parenting, December 17, 2009
This review is from: The Conspiracy Against Childhood (Paperback)
I read this book twenty years ago; while trying to decide if I should homeschool my two boys. It helped me make the decision which was right for us--to come home. Ms Leshan trained in Early Childhood Education, and used to write a column for Woman's Day magazine. I read her column for years before I read the book. She is, quite simply, a very well-educated, common sense advocate for young folk. She makes the valid point, that our youth today are bombarded with educational programs, dance, music, sports--scheduled beyond belief--yet, they have no time to play and enjoy their childhood. The book is an old one--out of print, I suppose--but, its message is more important than ever. Children now are micro-managed in school, pushed beyond belief--yet many are unhappy, and often have poor social and few life skills. Those two boys of mine are grown-ups now--and making their way in the world. I enjoyed every minute of having them at home. They learned to cook, clean, mend, do some auto repair, and raise animals. I am presently mom to my 13 year old daughter--who has never seen the inside of a classroom. My daughter reads an average of 5 thick books a week, cooks, does needlecraft, raises animals, helps on our farm, does her workbooks with minimal help from me, bakes--including cake decorating, and is an accomplished artist (self-taught). She attends church , is advancing in Girl Scouts, and has many friends. If I could give new parents a bit of advice, it would be--love your children--enjoy them. Take your time, and let them take theirs--life isn't a race--its a journey!
