Book Description

February 22, 2007
Presenting an insight into child abuse within the Catholic Church, the author recounts his traumatic experience of being sexually abused as a child at the Salesian College of Chertsey, Surrey. It is a story about arrogance, injustice and betrayal; and it is also a story about the healing power of love and the value of friendship.

About the Author

The Author: Graham Wilmer was born in Bedford, England in 1951. He was sexually abused by a male teacher at the Salesian College in Chertsey, Surrey, for a period of two years, and was forced to remain silent once he told the school authorities what had been happening. The abuse left deep seated psychological scars that resulted in years of alcohol abuse and other harmful addictions, leading finally to a serious mental health breakdown in 1998. As part of his recovery, he wrote about his experiences in 'Survivor' and founded The Lantern Project, a registered charity that helps victims of child abuse cope with their problems.

Excellent reporting re an underreported subject (misconduct and misprison of felony by the Catholic order of Salesian priests and brothers). Due to advanced age, their numbers are swiftly declining to the extent that few of them are found in the classroom. Their woeful incapacity to teach high school subjects was compensated for by a reign of terror and intimidation in the classroom, the corridors, the yard etc. A truly angry bunch of men who could in a moment flash a corporate smile.

This paperback is a must read for all that once held the church and its worldly representatives in such high esteem. It is redemptive in that the author found solace - something that eludes the vast majority of Catholics in the archdiocese of NY with its present Cardinal who hires pitbull attorneys to defend the church's gold bullion and succeeds temporalily by arguing that its victims brought suit after the statute of limitations expired. Doesn't Egan know that this statute doesn't apply in the hereafter - or does he only care about the here and now?
