Book Description

June 2006
This volume, published in the year of the one hundredth anniversary of Bonhoeffer's birth, documents Bonhoeffer's life under the increasing restraints and fateful events of World War II Germany.

In hundreds of letters, including ten never-before-published letters to his fiancée, Maria von Wedemeyer, as well as official documents, short original pieces, and a few final sermons, the volume sheds light on Bonhoeffer's active resistance to and increasing involvement in the conspiracy against the Hitler regime, his arrest, and his long imprisonment. Finally, Bonhoeffer's many exchanges with his family, fiancée, and closest friends, demonstrate the affection and solidarity that accompanied Bonhoeffer to his prison cell, concentration camp, and eventual death.

About the Author

Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906–45), a German pastor and theologian, played a central role in the Confessing Church during the Nazi period and became one of the most influential theologians of the twentieth century. He studied in Berlin and at Union Theological Seminary in New York City and wrote several books read widely in German and English. His theology and personal witness continue to challenge Christians of all denominations.

Active in the German resistance movement, Bonhoeffer traveled extensively while working for the Abwehr, the German counterintelligence organization. His role in a plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler ultimately cost him his life, and he was hanged by the Gestapo on April 9, 1945.

Mark Brocker is Pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, Tacoma, Washington, and teaches at the Northwest House of Theological Studies, Salem, and at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary, Berkeley.
