5.0 out of 5 stars A Conspiracy of Ravens - "I've gotta feeling...", September 29, 2011
By

Book #1, The Mermaid in the Basement, flows smoothly into Book #2, A Conspiracy of Ravens. In the sequel, we see Lady Trent beginning to "feel" life after her pain from a loveless marriage that left her numb to the joys of life. To compensate, she denied God and wrapped herself up in her scientific work. Toward the end of the book, however, she pleasantly surprises her admirer and Christian friend, Dylan Tremayne, when she quietly admits that God did indeed intervene in their difficulty. True love conquers high-society decorum is a recurring theme in several of the characters. The simple mystery of "who done it" was portrayed cleverly. I loved the storyline of the missing heir. Morris' characters are never too insignificant. He colorfully describes and includes each one as an integral part of the story. The Conspiracy of Ravens is another great work by Gilbert Morris. I am looking forward to the conclusion of the Lady Trent Series in Book #3, Sonnet to a Dead Contessa.

4.0 out of 5 stars The second book in the Lady Trent Series..., October 17, 2010
While I did enjoy this book, I found that I liked the first one in the series "The Mermaid in the Basement" (Lady Trent Series #1) just a little better. I'd give this one about a 3.75 star rating, so I rounded it up to 4 stars.

Most of the original characters from the first book are back again, Serafina Trent and her family, Dylan, and even Matthew Grant. A new noble family is introduced to us, the Haydens. They were unable to have children except for one infant who died shortly after his birth 18 years ago....or so they thought. Evidence comes to light about a baby switch, which means their son Trevor is actually alive and living in the slums of London with no idea who he really is. Serafina and Dylan are enlisted to find him, and the search begins...

There's quite a few people in the Hayden family, and at first I found it difficult to keep them all straight. I had trouble "clicking" with some of them, although there were a few that I liked. It seems like the first book (The Mermaid in the Basement) had more of Serafina and Dylan sneaking around doing detective work, which I thought was a really fun part of the story, and I missed that here.

Overall, I did enjoy "A Conspiracy of Ravens", but for some reason the storyline of the previous book just hooked me a little more. I have already started the next (and last?) book in the series, "Sonnet to a Dead Contessa" (Lady Trent Mystery Series #3), and I'm looking forward to seeing where the characters go next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Second in the series doesn't disappoint, June 13, 2010
I read the first and second books in this series back to back. And reading "Conspiracy" didn't change my opinion one iota. I don't have a favorite, either. I like them both.

I still love this series. It's refreshing, enjoyable, interesting, and well-written. I do recommend reading Book 1 first since that's where you initially get to know the characters. If you did read "Conspiracy" standalone, you'd miss out on the character dynamics between the male and female lead, and I think that's so important to understanding this story -- because "Conspiracy" pretty much picks up where "Mermaids" left off.

I haven't read any other works by G. Morris. From what I've heard, this is a departure from his normal writing style..? That's just hearsay to me. But whatever he did, I like it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book, easy read, clever mystery, September 14, 2009
I enjoyed the book. I like to read stories that are set in the 19th century. One can learn a little about the life style of that period. The book moves fairly quickly. It's an easy read. The mystery was cleverly done. The characters become friends. I think anyone would enjoy this book. It's typical Gilbert Morris material.

I really enjoyed this book. I liked the setting and the characters. The style seems a little different than some of his other books. God is real in some of the people's lives and some do not follow him, the way it is in real life.
