A wonderful reference tool!!,

I've read Doreen Virtue's book, "Constant Craving" which has all of the scientific data on food cravings (note to the reader from France who complained). This A-Z book contains the invaluable chart of food craving metaphysical meanings, and it is a handy way to reference those cravings. It is uncanny how accurate these emotional meanings are!Again, if you want the full scientific studies on food cravings, buy the paperback version of "Constant Cravings." But if you want a handy-dandy desk reference that will help you squelch those annoying food cravings, this is the book for you!

() Forget MJ, forget coke, forget crack, forget even ALCOHOL AND CIG'S, the most overused and overABUSED substance in the country (perhaps even the WORLD) is FOOD....More often than not,food is exploited as a drug if you really think about it.It is NOT meant to substitute emotion or love, and it is MOST CERTAINLY not designated as some wonder drug that gives you an instant "high"...Food is meant as fuel to a person as gas is to a vehicle. This is something the book has allowed me to realize. It has also helped me realized that we have been conditioned most our lives by society to signify/express our emotions even social habits via food and that's one nasty habit....I have now broken free from the cycle of emotional eating thanks to this book...And know that if ever I "crave" a certain food, it's really an EMOTION INSIDE OF ME that needs "feeding". And that yes it IS possible to outlet your emotions WITHOUT having to resort to eating your way out of your bad feelings. Life is WAY too short to spend time thinking about what you're HUNGRY FOR. These are things that the book has opened my mind to discover....And if you too accept the book's offerings with an open mind, it could very well benefit you as it has myself.

NOT a scientific approach,

I was expecting a book that would tell me something like, if you're craving red meat, your body is telling you that you are probably lacking iron and here are some healthful ways to get more iron in your diet. Instead, this book takes a SPIRITUAL approach. It states that if you're craving a hamburger, it probably means that you are, "Feeling insecure and unclear. Wanting direction, motivation, and energy." The way to deal with this is, according to the author, to make the following affirmation: "I release my life to the universe, knowing that god has wonderful plans for me. When I follow these plans, all the details are taken care of." ...This simply does not work for me.Although this book gives some good standard (nothing particularly new) healthy eating advice in the first chapters, the author never explains the basis for why a certain food should have one meaning rather than another. If a spiritual approach works for you, you might like this book. As for myself, had I been able to leaf through it, or if the summary had been more detailed, I would never have purchased this book. As it stands, this looks like a good opportunity to try out Amazon's return policy! :-)

If the San Diego reader IS NOT able to "enjoy the moment" without the aid of FOOD, then this book is ESPECIALLY for that person...I haven't even bought the book yet and already I am relating what Ms. Virtue is trying to convey...I heard about her and her book from a magazine article she wrote in "Woman's Own" magazine, much of the article was excerpts from the book. I am SO amazed of how ACCURATE she is with specific food cravings and it's emotional connection! I look back and see that whenever I DID crave a certain food like FUDGE, CHOCOLATE ICE CREAM or even BREAD AND BUTTER that deep down I really DID feel the feelings she writes about! I never paid attention to it before since I thought craving a particular food had nothing to do with how I felt. I always knew there was some connection between food and emotion and how it can sometimes influence HOW you eat, but never knew that it had any INFLUENCE on WHAT YOU EAT! I mean, this is DEEP STUFF. Now I will think twice before indulging in BROWNIES...This book teaches you to KNOW what is triggering the craving so it can be stopped at the source and no longer try to "shut up" how you feel by stuffing the discomfort with food. This book tries to teach you to NOT be like that San Diego reader by using FOOD AS A CRUTCH. I have given the book a neutral rating as I do not HAVE it *DUH* but I know as sure as hell that I WILL BUY IT!

This is the 4th copy of this book I've purchased. I give it when someone is starting a new food plan to help with the cravings for specific things. Very often the simple act of looking up the chocolate, ice cream, pasta etc. will take enough time for the craving to pass. I have to laugh because the explanation is so right on! I'm craving popcorn because I am procrastinating? When I look at what I am doing and what I think I should be doing, ya, I don't want to get started on the next thing so use popcorn as a "spacer". Reading the affirmations really helps too. The best part is that I am empowered because the food doesn't have control, there is a real reason that particular food is wanted and once I can see what the core issue is, often I can take care of that instead. Great help to me, hope it is for you too.

This book gives some excellent insight into our way of thinking and our behavior from what we are craving to eat! For the most part I have found it to be on target with how or what I was feeling at the time of my craving and the author gives some suggestions for a different way of thinking if or when the craving comes again.

If I want a 3 Musketeers bar, repeating the affirmation "I enjoy this moment now" is not going to help me. I won't enjoy the moment until I have a 3 Musketeers bar! How about telling me an alternate, healthy food I can eat that nullifies whatever internal chemical reaction causes the craving? Don't buy this book if that's the information you're looking for.
