"With Mitt Romney's close loss to President Obama in November 2012 even as Republicans extended their 2010 gains in state legislatures and governorships, American conservatism stands at a crossroads. In moving forward, it would do well to study the high points of American conservatism over the last seventy years, which confirms Burke's teaching that conservation and correction of liberty depend on reconciling liberty with tradition, order and virtue." -- pp. 77-78

For most Americans of the conservative persuasion the re-election of Barack Obama was a crushing blow. We simply could not fathom that a person espousing such radical views and overseeing such a weak economy could ever win a second term as President. Conservatives have been battered and bruised and their nerves have been worn to a frazzle. The temptation is to throw up our hands and walk away but we know better than that. Time is of the essence and conservatives need to regroup, reboot and re-energize as quickly as possible. But how do we do this? Peter Berkowitz thinks he has the answer. In his new book "Constitutional Conservatism: Liberty, Self-Government and Political Moderation" Berkowitz calls for libertarians and social conservatives to put aside their differences and work towards reclaiming the principles of liberty embodied in the Constitution. Like it or not, the past two Presidential elections have made it abundantly clear that neither social conservatives nor libertarians can achieve a majority without the aid of the other.

In the first third of "Constitutional Conservatism" Peter Berkowitz lays the groundwork for his thesis by quoting liberally from the writings of the noted eighteenth-century Irish statesman, author, orator, political theorist and philosopher Edmund Burke.

Though broad and overly-specific at the same time. This book gives a solid account of the beginnings of conservatism and how the movement has evolved. Good Read.

When is a conservative not a conservative? The answer can be found in Constitutional Conservatism: Liberty, Self-Government, and Political Moderation. The author does everything he can to claim that the New Deal and the Great Society are, get this, actually conservative principals. This is, of course, nothing but nonsense. The author has no understanding of the great minds that influenced our founding fathers. He never even mentions them by name so he can't articulate their ideas. The same is true of the federalist and anti-federalist. They are given the shaft too.

Many excellent books have been written on this subject but this is not one of them. I would recommend Liberty & Tyranny by Mark Levin or The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Constitution if one wants to learn about liberty, the constitution, and the conservative philosophy. The footnotes in these two excellent books will lead you to other great works on this very important topic.

This looks like an interesting book. WaPo's conservative blogger, Jennifer Rubin likes the book and is doing a two-part interview with the author, Peter Berkowitz. The link to part I of the "conversation" is here:
