Book Description

A major problem in current applied mathematics is the lack of efficient and accurate techniques to solve optimization problems in the calculus of variations and optimal control theory. This is surprising since problems occur throughout many areas of applied mathematics, engineering, physical sciences, economics, and biomedicine. For instance, these techniques are used to solve rocket trajectory problems, current flow problems in electronics manufacturing, and financial risk problems in investing. The authors have written a unique book to remedy this problem. The first half of the book contains classical material in the field, the second half unique theoretical and numerical methods for constrained problems.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent textbook for students, February 20, 1999
By A Customer
The book covers ordinary optimization problems (constrained and unconstrained) and nonstochastic continuous-time dynamic problems. Its chapter on numerical theory and its appendix on related books are particular useful. The book presents optimization problems in a very understandable way. With many examples and graphic illustrations, students would be able to understand the materials easily. I would use it as a textbook for students in economics.

3.0 out of 5 stars There are better options, June 16, 2011
This review is from: Constrained Optimization In The Calculus Of Variations and Optimal Control Theory (Hardcover)
The price does not justify the quality of this text. All of the bits are there, but the presentation is kind of frustrating. The authors present the calculus of variations without introducing technical details, and then followup with the details in later chapters. I find this approach confusing and I end up jumping back and forth. A much better alternative is Charles Fox, "An introduction to the calculus of variations", and it's less than $10.
