Too Academic,
By
This review is from: Construction Estimating Using Excel (Paperback)
This book is for academia and not for any type of practical estimating. Heavy into the take-off and weak in pulling together an actual estimate. Problems are redudant and tedious. Very weak in Mechanical, Electrical or Plumbinng divisions

The descriptions of estimating are fundamentally sound, but the way the mathematics is explained is a direct contrast to the way things are taught in most schools today. It's very "old-school", the methods are confusingly written.

It was a good book, helped me setup a data base for site work construction, create workbooks and calculate bid prices. Can be a very effective book if you take an excel class along with it. I would recommend it for anyone looking to save time in quantity takeoff, and labor calculations. Overall good book.

Waste of money,

I bought this book at $80. Seems there was a CD? Never found it. The book did make a few tips here and there, but the long paragraphs made me unable to get them. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who needs practical applications (you will lose your shirt...). The Excel part is an disappointment, too. One chapter was written like a Microsoft quick-reader. Then all subsequent chapters just present formulas without any explanation. Overall, a long and boring read. I would like to value this 800+ page book at price of $30 at most. Can I get a refund? Haha... Rumours on the street are saying DeWalt will have a new Estimating handbook this year with good Excel spreadsheet coverage. Would be interested in seeing that one.

I waited and waited and waited and never received it. I was very disapointed. Then I received a note that I wasn't going to get it. It would have been nice to know that sooner. I will never buy from Amazon.com again. Thanks
