5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect!
This book is exactly what I have been searching for. I am a newly employed estimator/project manager and was searching for some sort of reference book to help me along. Dr. Jackson does a fabulous job of explaining things from all angles. Her book is easy to read and understand even for a novice such as myself. 1.0 out of 5 stars Poor attempt
If your a construction industry professional looking for specific information, this is not for you. The book seems more suited for a student and does not provide any technical support.

5.0 out of 5 stars good intro to construction, March 21, 2007

I like this book! It's a good introduction to the world of construction management. I would suggest this read for prospective students interested in a building construction, architecture, facility design, mechanical or civil engineering degree at the undergraduate or graduate degree level. A lot of the terminology in the book is what is really used in the construction industry. A scope of the industry is provided and the author covers important subjects such as estimating and scheduling - as well as project management and contract administration. She's very thorough and she doesn't pull any punches. She let's you know up front that construction management is a challenging and often difficult career to master. But the author also reminds the reader that it's a rewarding career since the buildings and stuctures created will usually be around long after people involved in it's construction live.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference, December 19, 2006
This review is from: Construction Management JumpStart (Paperback)
This book contains useful information in an accessible, converstional tone. It is a great reference for someone just starting out in the field, or a college student who wants to know what a construction manager's job is all about. Reading this book is like spending a day on the construction site shadowing the author. It offers a good feel for the tasks and responsibilities of a CM.

I have run a construction company for years and we're expanding. This is not an exhaustive text on construction management but instead an overview. I found it well written and organized. She gives insightful anecdotes in a way that illustrates the topic, but not so much that it is annoying like some books.

I was able to reinforce what I already knew and it helped me formulate a new business plan to accomodate our growth. It would be a good book for those who are interested in getting into the construction industry, but don't know at what capacity. It will give you a great idea on what career paths there are in the industry.

It is also filled with information on where to go after you read the book. The only reason I am not giving it five stars is because Sybex doesn't have any online information on the book anymore.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jump Start is just that, June 6, 2011
This review is from: Construction Management JumpStart (Paperback)
This book is intended as an introductory to Project Management. It covers all the fundamentals and then some. First it covers the Revised Project Management Body of Knowledge (PIMBOK). Naturally it is not the PMBOK but it is a complimentary view for those getting into the field of project management and related disciplines.

There is more to this book than meets the eye. Many of the charts are in strategic location of the book and again in appendixes. This book can not be everything for everyone but if you look in the index you may find there is more here than in most introductory books. As a test the first thing I looked for was risk standard deviation and it was there under a section on "Three Point Estimate."

The glossary not only has terms used in project management but also common words that are used differently in project management. Such as "Warrant Period" - A period of time when the stakeholders can notify the team id problems and have them corrected immediately.

I am a little confused on the description of the Author as the back cover says that Kim Heldman, PMP, has over ten years of experience in project management. Yet inside it the book states Kim Heldman is the Chief Information Officer for the Colorado Department of Natural Resources. She has over 14 years of project management experience in the information technology field.

True that there are different methods not covered in the book and also how to integrate the information into different disciplines and coordinate with agencies as the FDA. But those subjects are for a different book.

Anyway you look at it this book serves its purpose and can still be used for years to come as a reference.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good oreintation for those considering entering the commercial construction field, April 29, 2008
This review is from: Construction Management JumpStart (Paperback)
The book is a useful overview of the management and administrative aspects of a commercial construction company. It is clearly written for a student or others considering entering the field. The organized presentation may clarify and refresh the thinking of a seasoned professional, but will provide little new in-depth information.

A limitation is that this is a construction management, but not project management perspective. So, the idea of establishing the nature and goal (charter) of a project, and feed back and control is not covered. And the quality system is presented in chapter 11 only as an inspection filter at the end of the project, not as an intregal part of planning and delivery.

This book gives great insight into the Construction industry. I purchased it for a class I am taking and would recommend it to anyone 'just wondering' how it all works or wanting to learn more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well Written, September 18, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I'm using this book as the text resource for an introductory level course in Construction Management at a four-year accredited program in the Southeast. The students are responding favorably to the conversational style of the writing and the level of content in terms of depth. The book works equally well for both my more experienced students and the ones who are just getting their feet wet in the career field. If you're looking for a great overview book on the construction industry this is a definite buy; if however you are looking for great depth on any one particular area of construction management you should probably look elsewhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dollar for Dollar Best Value, June 1, 2010

This review is from: Construction Management JumpStart (Paperback)
This is a great little book, its packed with information but not in a textbook like format. It is essentially everything you need to know to get started with CM and it is peppered with real world stories based on the authors experiences. I would say it is great for people considering a CM degree to get an understanding of what the field entails, but it is also equally valuable for tradespeople considering moving to a superintendent position or starting their own company. I use mine both as a personally reference, and to give to my up and coming tradesmen when they move to a lead position. I would highly recommend it to anyone in the trades.
