Book Description

April 1, 2010
Marketing in the architectural, engineering and construction industries lags behind most others in sophistication and strategies. Many professional practices and contractors chase public tender/bidding opportunities and others rely on repeat and referral business without appreciating the power of their brand (if they know what the word 'brand' means).

This book addresses marketing challenges with a positive and practical approach especially for business owners who don't want to be bogged down in clichés and who have been encouraged to try a variety of marketing ideas which simply don't work.

The author has published a network of regional construction industry newspapers and websites for 20 years but does not encourage AEC marketers to use paid advertising, except in exceptional circumstances. He shows instead how being proactive with relationships and referrals -- rather than simply relying on them -- and working with relevant associations can provide incredible marketing results at little cost and how the marketing process can be enjoyable as well as profitable.

More About the Author

Mark Buckshon has published regional construction newspapers and websites since 1990. After graduating from the University of British Columbia in 1976, he set off for an adventure in Africa culminating in 1979-80 with employment as a sub-editor on the Bulawayo Chronicle as Rhodesia transformed to Zimbabwe.

Upon returning to Canada, after a period as a communications/public relations officer within the federal government, he set out on his own to publish newspapers and websites for the construction industry. Over the years, he developed an innate understanding of the industry, its challenges and opportunities -- and has set out to share the insights and ideas for the community.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy answers for Construction Marketing, April 20, 2010
This review is from: Construction Marketing Ideas: Practical strategies and resources to attract and retain clients for your architectural, engineering or construction business (Paperback)
I am impressed. Construction Marketing Ideas provides a comprehensive overview of not simply the basics of marketing, but truly how to leverage marketing to bring work in the door. The book is filled with practical ideas and stories from others in the construction industry. Beyond anything else it challenged me to think outside the "marketing" box.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! A must read!, February 12, 2012
This review is from: Construction Marketing Ideas: Practical strategies and resources to attract and retain clients for your architectural, engineering or construction business (Paperback)
This book starts out with a compelling premise: You don't need to be great at marketing to be great at marketing construction services.

The author then leads you by the hand, teaching you how to successfully market your business (in both the good times and the bad). The journey is sprinkled with stories of what the author and others have learned, through experience, about what works and what doesn't.

I find many marketing books, especially aimed at the construction industry, to be as enjoyable to read as poking your eyes out with red hot sticks. But Construction Marketing Ideas breaks that mold and serves up a book that anyone can read and follow along with.

Especially if you own or manage a small to medium-sized construction business, this book touches on topics that are worth your attention and simply aren't found in any other book.

Mr. Buckshon's book opened my eyes to the possibilities of business development in the Commercial Construction market. I am currently implementing a few marketing strategies that were generated while reading this book. We are in a new economy and only those with knowledge will survive! Be the first in your market to set yourself apart from the competition!
