Great and very useful book, lousy "textbook" price, December 11, 2005
This review is from: Construction Measurements (Wiley Series of Practical Construction Guides) (Hardcover)
I own an older edition of this book, and it's very useful and valuable, particularly on the issue of how measurement errors are propagated in a job. Barry spends a lot of time discussing the fundamentals of measurement, calculation of area, distance, tangential and radial curves, and performing checks on your work in the field.
If you're a surveyor, cartographer, or even a GIS specialist, you can learn a lot from this book that you would possibly never learn in any classroom.
I recommend this book highly, but it's very disappointing that it's apparently published by Wiley as a textbook, and for that reason my rating of this edition dropped considerably. The newer edition covers modern measuring technologies such as Electronic Distance Measurement (EDM) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS). Older editions were published with an ordinary cloth hardback binding, and since this is usually good enough for desktop reference or even field use, it's absurd that an updated edition targeted at this audience would be priced at $160.00 US in paperback!
I would strongly suggest looking for a copy in the used market.
