A Guidebook for the Astrologer-Counselor,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Consulting Astrologer's Guidebook (Paperback)
Donna Cunningham is easy to read so that makes all her books very accessible to "students".
This book offers lots of insights into the reader/client relationship. Donna points out many of the astrological reading pitfalls and how most beginning astrologers (and even seasoned ones)fall into these traps and wind up giving readings that point out problems, but offer no solutions to the client. She says you shouldn't be a Pollyanna type of reader who doesn't talk about a client's problem and you should be able to counsel these clients and give them referrals if they have serious issues. Listening to a client and asking the questions that slowly build trust and elicit dialogue are skills that require study and empathy and there's a fine line between helping and hurting a client. She really makes you think about the language you use (don't use astro-jargon). She says the interpretation of an aspect comes from translating it into behaviors, emotions, and history. She will tell a client, "Please stop me if I get too technical. I do also speak English." This is a difficult lesson for astrologers to learn let alone put into practice. She talks about the different styles of conversation needed for the variety of clients. Use their prominent planets, signs, and/or house traits to flavor your style of reading. Some clients babble to keep the astrologer away from discussing the issues (Mercury / Air types). Some clients won't open up hardly at all (Scorpios and Capricorn AC people). Some clients won't tell the astrologer the real problem they have come to discuss until they throw out the "door-knob" question that they ask as they are walking out the door (time to sit down again and discuss it). Her solutions are in this book of how to control or manage the flow of the reading. There is so much more to savor and use in this book. The table of contents, which can be viewed, will tell you all the gems this book and its author have to offer you. Even if you do not do readings (read the Introduction "Why Can't Jenny Read?") you will find this book very interesting from a psychological point of view. |
