Book Description

Eli and Clara's story continues as she tries to finish high school. Eli is as over protective as ever and Tate and his group of friends are no help. They wait for the Horde, always looking over their shoulder. But the ever annoying but strangely prophetic bird begins to become more of a chatter box and Eli learns something that could change some things. Not just for him and Clara, but Devourers everywhere.

Then an unexpectedness guest comes forcing Eli to flee with Clara, leaving her temporary family behind. She is thrown into his world of underground 'traitors' and learns much of his past. They meet many new people and creatures along the way to freedom. But when tragedy strikes the two, will Clara see the monster in Eli? Can she handle his strange world and awful past? Will one of them lose their life forever...

4.0 out of 5 stars Just a Two Book Series June 6, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Well, it has been a while since I read and enjoyed Devour (The Devoured Series), so it took a little memory jogging to get back into the story. While Devourer had suspense and an edgy quality to it, this one was more serious because Clara was dying and Eli was desperate for a cure.

Possible Spoilers:

Clara's illness is a result of her sucking Eli's bloody finger in book one. The devourer blood inside her is warring with her human blood and if it wins she will die. Eli is desperate to find a cure and is willing to do ANYTHING in order to help her.

Clara and Eli are a solid couple knowing that the Horde will soon seek them out again but want to graduate before leaving town. Unfortunately, Clara's sickness is getting worse, so Eli must find a way to cure her. His brother Enoch shows up with a childhood friend, Finn to convince Eli to take Clara to the Wall to sever the bond. Enoch hates the bond for making him protect Clara and Finn wants his old Eli back and out of the clutches of the human Clara. Eli decides that he can get answers to Clara's illness at the Wall so they all travel together for different reasons. Clara is exposed to a Consumed Bar with all the unusual creatures that hang out there and the drugs they push on others. She experiences jealousy, fear and lust from the smoke and is able to feel all the emotions that Eli emits now that the Devourer is in her blood. They finally make it to the other side of the Wall and find deception, betrayal, trickery and defeat.

I have enjoyed other stories by Shelly Crane and have admired the purity her characters exhibit in their sexual lives and the lack of profanity. I love that she writes about admirable teenagers and not common ones. In Consume, Ms. Crane's message is uniting against the odds for a common goal or acceptance. "We've all been chased by someone who thought we shouldn't be who or what we are. But together, with all our mixed knowledge and powers and minds, we're stronger than them. Fight for our right to love, live and be happy".

This does need better editing, but it does not detract too much from the story. Consume is the final book in the two book series.

Would I/Did I buy it? Yes (2.99)
Would I read it again? Maybe, one day
Would I recommend it to friends? Yes

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved it!! July 14, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I really liked the conclusion of this story! I had to give it 5 stars! The way that Eli was with Clara just made my heart melt. It honestly reminded me so much of the way my husband and I are with each other and also reminded me so much of the Significance series that I just HAD to give it 5 stars this time. I loved their playful banter back and forth and that he was always encouraging her to be snarky and sarcastic and worried when she wasn't. I loved seeing Enoch's character evolve and Clara's banter with him, how they became more brother and sister over time. I love that the characters don't have this "fairytale" life and they have hurdles they have to deal with, yet it only makes them stronger. I think I'd be here all day if I went on about all the things I loved about this book. I really can't wait to see more from Enoch's character.

Very well done, Shelly! I couldn't put this book down and missed sleep, read it on car rides...mmmhmmm, you really know what a girl's heart desires. I finished this book in less than a day, and only because a girl's gotta sleep and be a mom sometime! :)

Consumed, the second and final book in the Devoured series will not disappoint Shelly Crane fans. And if you have never read one of her books, what are you waiting for? The blurb sums up the book well and lets you know what to expect from this book without giving away any clues or spoiling the outcome, which I won't do either. As with Devoured, Eli is still a sweet heart but even more so now that he has Clara. Clara is still strong and independent but the situation plays on this a bit and she becomes much softer with Eli. Clara and Eli are just magical together and their connection is the stuff of stories. Again Shelly has written characters that are just so interesting and instantly likable that you are pulling for them to have their happy ending.

Consumed, initially seemed to move quite slow before Eli and Clara go on the run, but then the story moved really quick. If anything I did feel it was a little rushed, and I felt that some of the situations would have benefited from slowing down the action and taking more time explain the new people and the new environment. Consumed introduced a lot of different concepts, characters and mythological creatures that were not there in Devoured, and I personally I would have liked these explored more. Shelly has such a nice way of describing people and places and I felt this was lacking a little from Consumed. This is not to say that I did not enjoy the book, I did, I loved it, but not as much as Devoured.

And for all you who think that this is the end of the series, although the story has a nice ending, I can see if Shelly wanted to she could do alot more with people she has created within this series, and I would welcome that.
Will I read it again? Sure
Would I recommend it? Yes
