Book Description

Wholesale revision, complete updating and dramatic expansion characterize this Fourth Edition. Students and practitioners of ophthalmology as well as optometry and physiological optics will be pleased to rediscover this book as the premier manual of contact lens practice. The introduction of rigid gas permeable contact lenses has added a new dimension to the contact lens field. Every year more materials have been developed, each having a higher oxygen permeability than its predecessor. The effect of these lens developments on the organization of this text has been substantial and has made necessary a nearly complete revision of every chapter. All of the material on rigid contact lenses has been revised to incorporate the modern parameters for gas permeable lenses. A new chapter has been introduced which covers the fundamentals of contact lens gas permeability and the oxygen requirements of the cornea. There is also a new chapter on rigid lens flexing which precedes the chapter on toric rigid lenses. There is considerable new material in the chapters on lens care and storage and the refitting of former PMMA wearers. The section on hydrogel contact lenses has been updated to introduce the new lens designs, and to include a major expansion in the area of lens care and storage. The procedures for dealing with some of the more recent problems in lens disinfection are discussed at length. Another chapter includes a complete discussion of the requirements of extended wear and how well the various contact lenses fulfill these requirements. The chapters on the various specialized conditions for fitting contact lenses have all been updated to include the modern lens designs. Many other chapters have been updated and revised.

This review is from: Contact lens practice (Hardcover)
Bob mandell was my contact lens instructor at Berkeley, so I have known this book for nearly thirty years. I still come back to it when I need to get it right on a difficult rigid gas perm case. I remember his classromm lectures on exotic designs, like spherical power effect lenses, and this text is the next best thing to being there. Time has brought us new materials, and new designs, but for the fundamentals, Mandell is and maybe always will be the ultimate reference work.
