Keeping it simple, this book is a how to or child's guide, for electric rail traction power. It's got substations, protection, lots of overhead (contact) line design, coupling points (tie-station), lots of colour pictures, lots of equations and maths. If you are a electrical engineer working on a rail traction power project this book is your only required reference.

Its a good book for railway electrification designers, but far from being the "must have" book that the authros would like it to be. The problem is that being written by German authors, it is too heavily biased towards their systems and their methods of design. If it covered other electrification systems in a little more detail, then it would be a better book.

An exhaustive manual of electric railroading. It has been translated from German to English. Primarily European systems are discussed which have long history of electrification. Good purchase.

From transit systems to Class One railroads, this comprehensive volume is part-textbook, part-catalogue, part-how-to-manual for the conception, planning, design, construction, implementation and maintenance of electric railways. The book will be required reading for the engineers, operating personnel and system management people at railways, and their consultants. Urban planners, transportation planners, transportation policymakers and regulators, and transportation journalists with both industry and general audiences would also greatly benefit from reading sections of this book. Major railways and commuter systems with electrified lines should have several copies of this book within reach of not just management but employees in the middle of managing daily operations. Mr. Kiessling and his Siemens colleagues deserve considerable credit for updating the technical literature on electric railways with the release of this latest edition of their book.
