One of their BEST, regardless of what others say!,

This review is from: Contagious (Audio CD)
Having been a Y&T fan since 1981, like many of you, I saw the progression from the hard rock metal sound of the first 4 A&M releases to a more polished and commercial sound, as found on Contagious. Regardless of the stylistic change found on this cd, this is one seriously great disc! As good as the the first 4 Y&T releases are, I am glad they shifted gears a bit. Who wants a band to make the same album several times (not that ANY of their albums sound the same)? Not me!
There are some high class rock songs (Fight For Your Life, Armed & Dangerous, Eyes Of A Stranger....actually, I really like the entire cd, with the exception of 'The Kid Goes Crazy'). The production is really good, the band are tight, Dave's voice and guitar playing are in amazing form (check out the solos on 'Fight', 'A&D', 'Eyes' and the AMAZINGLY soulful instrumental 'I'll Cry'...it does not get much better than this!), Jimmy's drumming is great, the songs are excellent. What more can you ask for? Do yourself a favor and check this cd out.

CONTAGIOUS ROCKS & MOVES NON STOP!!!!!,

Oh my, what an album. I loved this when it first came out that I bought it on album and casette. Now I have it on album, casette, and cd. This cd here is if not the best Y&T cd then within the top 5. The opening track CONTAGIOUS rocks, I still remeber the video. Moving down the line of songs into THE KID GOES CRAZY was such a good party song, what rock was about in this time era, which I miss so much. Now moving into the last lyrical song of EYES OF A STRANGER and closing with I'LL CRY FOR YOU. I'd be surprised to hear that a Y&T fan doesn't have this cd. If you are a first time listener of Y&T, then this is the cd to have. It's great guitar work, drumming, and lyrics make this the Y&T album to have, so BUY IT!!!!

Energetic and fun.,
This review is from: Contagious (Audio CD)
Contagious is a cool and listenable album from Y&T. I've had this disc in my collection for quite some time. The album is in a mainstream hard rock musical direction. The musicianship, songwriting, and production are good. Contagious is energetic and entertaining from beginning to end. The guitar work is solid. Dave Meniketti does a lively job with the vocals, also. Ten tracks are included on this album. Almost all of the songs are straight-ahead hard rockers. There's also one ballad ("Temptation") and an instrumental ("I'll Cry for You"). The backing vocals throughout this disc are cool. Some of the tunes that I like are "Contagious," "Temptation," "Armed and Dangerous," and "I'll Cry for You." "Contagious" is still a good and energetic song--the guitar riff is pretty nice. "Temptation" is an enjoyable ballad, and "I'll Cry for You" is an impressive instrumental. Contagious is a solid, fun, and energetic album from Y&T. It's worth a listen.

I DON'T KNOW WHERE THESE CRITICS GET OFF SAYING "AFTER 5 MINUTES AFTER THEY'VE GONE YOU CAN'T REMEMBER THEIR NAME". THAT'S WRONG,EVERYONE THAT HAS EVER HEARD OF THEM, WANTS TO HEAR MORE.Y&T DOES NOT SOUND LIKE SOMEONES ELSE'S "OPPONENT".THEY HAVE A SOUND ALL THEIR OWN.I THINK THE CRITICS NEED TO LOOK CLOSER TO THAT RAPPING STUFF,INSTEAD OF ATTACKING ONE OF THE BEST BANDS THAT EVER CAME OUT OF THE BAY AREA.THIS REALLY ISN'T ONE OF THEIR BEST ONE, BUT IT'S STILL WORTH LISTING TO!

This is a solid |Y & T album,

Y & T were one of the greatest 'unknown' hard rock bands ever to emerge from the Bay area. Earthshaker is undeniably one of the greatest hard rock albums ever recorded; although the band has lost the plot in recent years, this album, and the following 'Ten' find them in good form. Most of the songs here are excellent; the title track is memorably catchy, 'Temptation' is a great ballad, 'Armed and Dangerous', 'Rhythm or Not' and 'Eyes of a Stranger' are bonafide Y & T classics. A fine and well produced album.

This album is one of my favorites by Y&T. I enjoy Y&T's earlier releases but this one really is a tasty, album. Dave and the boys do very well on this one.

Y &T sells out? Who cares, this album rocks!,

This review is from: Contagious (Audio CD)
More than any other Y&T release, 1986's Contagious is the album that gets trashed the most. The conventional wisdom is that the band "sold out" and "went glam" with this album, trying to latch on to the success of the hair metal scene (that Y&T had a major role in creating in the first place. Maybe there's some truth to the accusations (though nobody complained when Whitesnake tried to reintroduce themselves to hair metal fans), but I could care less how much hairspray the guys used as long as the album rocks, and let me tell you something - Contagious rocks!
Now I have to admit that Contagious was the first Y&T album I ever heard, so it has a special place in my heart. Still, I've played (and played, and played) their entire catalog enough to know that the melodic hard rock on this album is not that far removed from the melodic hard rock on Black Tiger or Mean Streak. You old school Y&T guys are no doubt clutching your chests and sputtering with rage by now, but can you honestly tell me a song like Contagious or Fight for Your Life would have been out of place on either of the albums I just mentioned, or that the power ballad Temptation is much different from This Time? Closing instrumental I'll Cry For You is the perfect counterpart to Black Tiger's From the Moon. There are some filler tracks, though reading the other reviews here it's apparent that one fan's filler is another fan's favorite, and there is an unmistakable hair metal production, but overall Contagious is just the kind of memorable melodic hard rock album Y&T is so well known for, and remains one of my absolute favorite Y&T releases. PS - I'd love to have a remastered version of this album (and Ten too, while we're at it) to go along with the other great reissues the band has released lately.

4 1/2 Stars - A Great Summertime Melodic Metal Album!,
By
This review is from: Contagious (Audio CD)
After the poor sales results with their previous "pop" album (DOWN FOR THE COUNT - a decent album), Y&T toughened up a little bit for CONTAGIOUS. CONTAGIOUS nearly broke Y&T big-time, until Geffen shifted their promotional money from Y&T to some new band (at that time) called Guns N Roses.... Ahhh, what could have been. But as it is, CONTAGIOUS is an infectious album filled with great riffs and catchy melodies, and stands as one of Y&T's better albums. The album blends the classic Y&T style with a little Bon Jovi and Van Halen, with some impressive results. The title track is, as many have stated, one of their best 5 or 6 songs, and other standout tracks include "L.A. Rocks," "Armed And Dangerous" (which sounds like MEAN STREAK era Y&T), "Rhythm Or Not," and "Bodily Harm." The only thigs keeping this from being a 5-Star album are the lack of originality in the songwriting ("The Kid Goes Crazy" was HEAVILY influenced by Van Halen's "Hot For Teacher, and a couple of the other songs lean toward generic Hard Rock), and a snare drum sound that is a little too overprocessed (not a lot, but a little). Otherwise CONTAGIOUS stands as a great example of Excellent Melodic Metal from the late 80's. -(and if you like this one I would also recommend Y&T's MEAN STREAK, Alice Cooper's HEY STOOPID, and Dokken's UNDER LOCK AND KEY)
