Book Description

Month-By-Month Gardening Series May 1997
Enjoy colorful plants every month of the year, indoors or out, with this valuable handbook that organizes container gardening in a simple seasonal progression. Each of the twelve chapters shows half a dozen or more plants in numerous variations that will bloom most effectively in a given month, as well as how and when to plant and care for them. Because container gardens are self-contained, you can grow acid-loving plants in an alkaline area, shady plants in a sunny climate, and warm-weather plants in cold parts of the country -- the choices of plants are much greater than for conventional gardening, and the tips offered here show you how to make the most of these advantages. The containers themselves add much to the charm, as you can select from a wide variety of pots, hanging baskets, and window boxes, or use your imagination to make your own containers from almost anything that will hold dirt and filter water. Full-color photos show you dramatic plantings for each month.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Container gardening is becoming more and more popular with gardeners who have little space to garden. Window ledges, front and back steps, balconies, and rooftops can hold any number of containers. Fruit, vegetables, herbs, annuals and perennials, and even small shrubs and miniature trees can be grown in them. In addition to the usual containers, wheelbarrows, pots and pans, copper coal buckets, and old tires can be used. For each month, there are instructions and checklists for seasonal tasks, profiles of the plants in bloom, and practical projects, such as planning a balcony garden, making an alpine trough garden or a miniature water garden, and planting hanging baskets, window boxes, and wall pots. As any gardener knows, there is much more to be done in summer than in winter, but the month-by-month format will keep gardeners busy year-round. This practical guide, a selection of five book clubs, contains 60 color illustrations and 110 black-and-white illustrations. 4.0 out of 5 stars Month to Month Container Gardening that Works!, June 1, 2000
This review is from: The Container Garden Month-By-Month (Month-By-Month Gardening Series) (Paperback)
This book is perfect for anyone who doesn't have the space to grow flowers or vegetables. I am not a green thumb, however, I found the instructions for growing plants in containers each month fairly easy to understand and follow. Thanks to Jackie Bennett I am now growing tomatoes for the first time from a container! I do have to mention that the book contains some terminology I am unfamiliar with, but then again, the book does not claim to be for beginners.
