Very Helpful!,
By Safiyya N. "Mother of four" (Alexandria, VA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Container Gardening for Dummies (Paperback)
I originally checked this book out from the library, and after renewing three times and being told I couldn't renew it any more, I broke down and bought my own copy. It is VERY helpful in explaining the types of plants that do well in containers, and how to take care of them, how to deal with pests, how to "winter over," and so on. There is an entire section on what you can put plants in (be creative!), what the different types of soils are and what that means to you, and what plants do well in whichever type of light you have. I keep my copy of this book handy, and refer to it often. It's the single best reference book I've found on the subject of Container Gardening. Herb Gardening for Dummies is also good, but not QUITE as good as this one.

A Great Basic Starter Book,
This review is from: Container Gardening for Dummies (Paperback)
I found lots of very useful information from pot sizes and soil (and soil-less) mixes as well as useful info on lots of plants, needs, watering etc. As container gardening is quite different than planting in the ground, I found this book VERY useful and different from all the other normal gardening books. I am a beginner, but love to research stuff to death and I find this book does give you a very good foundation to get started and do well.

Container Gardening for Dummies,
This review is from: Container Gardening for Dummies (Paperback)
As someone with a "black thumb" (I can generally kill a plant within 24 hours!) I found this book to be very helpful. Even though there are huge amounts of real and applicable information here, the author manages to keep it fun and very readable. The best part is that since reading this book and putting it to use I haven't lost one plant! In fact, they seem to be thriving.
The only reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is the layout. I feel more thought could have been put into the way the chapters are put together. Specifically, the fact that I had to skip past all the design ideas to get to the care information in the back. Even with this one minor flaw, I still highly recommend this book to anyone interested in starting their own container garden.

I'm a beginner to gardening and found this to be a wonderful book. It even has a section on which conifers (Christmas-tree-type trees) can be grown in containers. This is great - I'm going to grow my own little forest on my balcony.

An Excellent Reference!,

"Container Gardening for Dummies" is an outstanding book for someone who is just beginning in container gardening - as the name might suggest. It focuses heavily on gardening for those of us who have limited space in which to garden, and even goes as far as recommending certain plants for certain climates.
This is a great book, but a book more focused on gardening in general may be a better starter. Perhaps The Beginner's Guide to Urban Gardening: A Simple, Practical Guide to Creating Your Own Bountiful Indoor Garden would be more appropriate for a potential gardener who is breaking into the idea of gardening in a limited space. The book also spends considerable time on decorative ideas for gardening, which may not be appropriate for a person with very limited space. Once again, a book focused solely on urban gardening would be excellent. I purchased the book via my Kindle, and found the format to be entirely satisfactory. In some cases Kindle editions of books may not the easiest to navigate, but I found no problems with this particular work. In all though, this book is an indispensable reference for a person who is familiar with gardening, and is attempting to sharpen their skills with container gardening and decoration. I learned quite a bit from this book, and would definitely recommend it!

What I expected...,
By
This review is from: Container Gardening for Dummies (Paperback)
This book was pretty standard for what I expected. I needed to know the benefits and costs of keeping my plants in containers instead of just planting them outside, because I'm sick of bringing them inside every time the weather dips below freezing, only to take them right back outside because my cats love to chomp on them. I liked it enough to check out regular Gardening for Dummies, too.

I bought a few other books for Kindle on container gardening (I wish I never bought From Container to Kitchen see my review on that book) and this one is by far the best. I am an experienced container gardener looking for some tips to increase my productivity. I picked up some great tips and cant wait to try them out. I am already planning my garden. I always had trouble keeping things alive during the hot summers here, but now I feel confident that this year will be my best yet. I skipped some of the chapters (mostly houseplants and growing herbs) that I didn't need and still picked up great advice. I made lots of notes and even went out and bought a couple of fruit tree's that are doing great. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to either grow edibles in containers or even just houseplants. Look for great tips on Pot sizes and fertilizing techniques. There was also information on planting in cold or hot weather and watering. It covered common diseases and how to cure them. It also covers pests and how to deal with them. It is geared more towards organic remedies and states pesticides are a last resort.

A MUST-HAVE Book for Container Gardeners!,
By T. Bird (Asheville, NC USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Container Gardening for Dummies (Paperback)
This must be the best reference book for container gardens that I've ever gotten my hands on . Full of facts, tips, hints, and it covers EVERY aspect of the subject, from seeds, to planting, to suggestions on what CAN be grown in containers, how to maintain proper soil conditions, common problems, pests, etc. I love this book and highly recommend it to anyone interested in starting a container garden or trying to maintain one they currently have.

I got this book to start a small vegetable garden outside my apartment. It has lots of info on other types of plants such as annuals and perennials. It tells you what you need to know to simply grow the plants like potting mixes, fertilizing, what size container you need, and watering. I do wish it had a bit more on pruning but it recommends books on that and i guess it isn't absolutely essential for this books purpose. Overall a good buy.
