Book Description

Having a large yard these days does not necessarily mean that gardening is the only thing that homeowners can do. As long as the care given to the plants you grow in a pot equals the care you would give to an ordinary garden, you can grow almost anything in a suitable container. You may have heard that any container can be used to grow your plants. However, when compared, there are some materials that are considerably better and easier to use -- particularly for folks who are just getting into container gardening. Containers made from cheap plastic will ofttimes weaken and fade away in the sunshine. Although lightweight, this type of plastic was not designed for lasting useage.

It is important that whatever container you use for your herb or flower garden, the surfaces are thoroughly cleaned before anything is planted. This becomes even more important if the container you acquire is secondhand, just in case prior plantings were possibly diseased.

One great thing about container gardening is that you are able to move the pots around to more favorable locations if they don’t thrive in a particular spot. Plants can be established indoors, then easily moved to larger pots and placed outdoors when the time is appropriate.

William Ellis has learned the art of saving money in all aspect of his life. Learning about container gardening was a bonus for him. He initially made the mistake of spending too much money. William has put together this book mainly as a way to show garden lovers how they can continue to do what they love to do -- but at a much lower cost. For those who are just starting in container gardening, you’ll learn how to avoid spending ridiculous sums of money on container gardening.

William also gives details of how to spend mere pennies when you start your plant from seeds. Compare this to several dollars it will cost to purchase plants as seedlings. He recommends you make the compost yourself. You can further save money by reducing the amount of garbage you dispose of. William admits he has made many mistakes in container gardening. He provides a list of those mistakes you might encounter -- so you can avoid them.

5.0 out of 5 stars I am the poster boy of a no green thumb gardener... December 12, 2012
If killing plants was illegal, I would get the electric chair. What a delightfully insightful book for a guy like me that tries real hard but just can't seem to get it. I learned so much from this book that I can hardly wait for spring to arrive so I can try some what I learned. Buy this book; it is worth your time and investment.

I am thankful that you wrote this book on container gardening. I am truly a "no" thumbs gardener but "now" (no with a wow affect) that I have read this book, that will not be my song and dance anymore. This book is easy to read and the steps are easy to follow. I will be moving from a no thumbs gardener to a wow! look at my garden gardener.

My girlfriend always harps about my ignorance and near disdain to all things gardening but when I showed her my skills and new fond love for gardening she simply couldn't believe her eyes. She was laterally blown away. All thanks to William Ellis for this timely book. The book is just more than good and is equally excellent for any gardener no matter your level of experience; you will always have something useful to take away from the book.
Now, am sure to have a wonderful Christmas celebration with her this 2012.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wealth Of Information December 15, 2012
Verified Purchase
Container Gardening is a must read. People like myself, before I read this extremely educational book, probably assume that you need a huge yard in order to be a proper "gardener." The author, William Ellis, makes the point that this is not a "must" at all. In fact he cites the many advantages that a container garden has over tradional gardens.

This information by itself is worth much more than the price of this book. However, this is just the tip of the iceberg of what this book has to offer for those of "us gardeners."

I guarantee if you think you know a lot about gardening, this book will still offer you tips that you didn't know about.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hints and Help for Your Container Garden December 14, 2012
Verified Purchase
This fun, lighthearted little book is chock full of the author's enthusiasm and a myriad of creative ideas and container gardening practical advice from choosing your containers, getting the biggest bang for your buck at yard sales, end of season sales, to recruiting your child's old wagon. He is quick to add that there must be drainage and proceeds to tell you what and how. He tells you how to arrange your plants within the containers, height and width of plant to container for the best designs right down to the financial practicality of planting from seeds and how to make home-made, non-toxic bug killers, how and when to water, where to place your plants, and growing and pruning suggestions for your container herb garden... And that's just for starters. Well worth the investment, a handy little book to sharpen your artistic eye and gardening acumen.

5.0 out of 5 stars How To Grow A Bumper Crop Of Herbs February 12, 2013
By AlisonS

I've gained valuable knowledge from this book on container gardening. I'm a reasonably experienced yard gardener but this year I wanted to try growing herbs in containers close to the house. William Ellis's recipe for manure tea was very helpful and has led me to a bumper crop of fresh herbs.

Next year I'll be following his advice on crop rotation ... something I hadn't considered when planting containers.

I love some of his ideas for different containers that can successfully be used as planters. I especially like the photo of the old shoes planted with succulents.

Container Gardening - Secrets For The No Thumbs Gardener contains valuable and easy-to-follow instructions for the beginner container gardener while still being helpful to the more experienced gardener.
