I chose a three star rating for this book because, even though it was well paced and a fun read, I found some of the story highly implausible.
The characters were very well written and you did feel a bond with them while reading. The premise of the story was interesting also.
I would recommend this book to anyone who would like a fun quick read.
Thank you.

If you like zombie / post apocalyptic fiction I readily recommend this box set. It's not reinventing the wheel, but the author is competent and keeps the immediately likeable characters hurtling along at a fast pace. Perfect for a holiday read.

This author has a genuine talent for creating likeable characters, infusing them with backstory and putting them into creepy situations. Then he nukes it all with poor vocabulary, an unbelievable plot, weak characterization and boring action. When I say poor vocabulary I don't mean that the book needs more three syllable words. What I mean is that there are some big comprehension gaps in the way everyday words are used.

For example, if you're going to write a book about a viral infection, it would be really helpful to know what a virus is and what it does. This might even come in handy if someday one were to find themselves vacationing in an Ebola stricken nation. (Don't touch the poor people covered in bodily fluids please) In Contamination the entire story revolves around an infection that isn't infectious. The terms virus and toxic substance are used interchangeably leaving readers wondering exactly what's going on.

Which leads to the next big problem with this series. Supposedly one evil individual has managed to somehow build an organization capable of producing this mystery substance, contaminate virtually all food and drinking water in a tri-state area with it, then field enough men to send groups to every city and backwater town in the area to kill the remaining survivors. Presumably when this group has managed to exterminate the entire country a few states at a time, the mysterious poison? virus? will magically go away so that the members of the organization can rebuild their own civilization. If any of that sounds remotely possible or plausible to you, then buy this book. If, like the rest of us, you're saying, "Wha? Srsly?", then don't bother, because that's the basic premise behind the entire series.

There's plenty more confusion where that came from.

I enjoyed this series very much. This author has the talent to weave a story filled with all the emotions one can go thru and ten some. Tension, fear, despondency, and hope all find find a place within the pages of this series not to mention all the other feelings that will find a way to suffocate you more so than not. His characters are richly crafted with personality and believeability. You will not go wrong if you purchase this series. Your ride thru the mind of this author will be well worth the paltry cost.

This book was hard to put down until the end. Loved the characters and they all blended together very well and the book is well written. I plan on reading the rest of his books if they are the same as this one.

I love these end of world books. They always make me take stock of my own life and wonder what I would do in such a situation. The author writes in such a way that I care about the characters. I'm concerned with their welfare. This, to me, is a sign of a good book. Highly recommended.

I had previously read book 1 when it was offered for free as a standalone volume and awarded it three stars for effort despite some stylistic flaws. I noted with irritation the author's penchant for short chapters with cliffhanger endings which are resolved by turning the page and reading the next chapter, but felt that-- despite this pointless interruption in the narrative flow-- there might be something salvageable with some decent editing. When the boxed set became available some time later, I had quite frankly forgotten that I'd already read book one. Nevertheless, upon recognizing my error, I reread book one, followed by books two and three, in the hope that the author's skill would improve in the successive volumes. I am saddened to report that my hopes were soundly dashed. Instead of improving, the writing just grew worse and worse.

It didn't help that there were holes in the plot large enough to drive a white SUV through. At the risk of spoiling the plot for those who have yet to plod through this sorry mess, let me give one example. Cromwell's whole operation clearly required not only meticulous planning (ten years worth, according to the book) but it would have required an enormous outlay of cash-- money to buy his compound, set up a biological laboratory and research facility, purchase a mountain of supplies, an arsenal of weapons, and a few tons of ammunition. Not to mention that fleet of white SUVs and vans. Not only is how he came by this trove of funds left unaddressed, but all of this was done without drawing the attention of a single government agency.
