This review is from: Contemporary American Realism Since 1960 (Paperback)
Contemporary American Realism since 1960 was published in conjunction with the exhibition at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, September 1981. The opening chapter gives an overview and defines contemporary realism. Each of the five remaining chapters then considers a different aspect: Portraits, Nudes and the Figure Outdoors; Narrative painting; The New Landscape: Rural and Urban America; Still Life; and finally The Realistic Alternative in American Sculpture and Conclusion. The book includes a bibliography, list of illustrations and an index.
The book is well illustrated with 56 colour plates and 144 black and white illustrations. Most of the images are a good size with many full page, however often the images do not take full advantage of the large format. The quality of reproduction is very good with even the monochrome images providing a good representation. There are around 100 artists included in the study, among them William Bailey, Richard Estes, Robert Bechtle, Joseph Raphael, Philip Pearlstein, George Segal, Jack Beal, Alfred Leslie, Alec Katz, Fairfield Porter, Neil Welliver, Andrew Wyeth and Jamie Wyeth. 11" x 9" (28 cm x 22.8 cm) Published 1981 (this edition printer 1984) ISBN 0821215612. 256 pages.
