Book Description

September 15, 2007
Some styles never go out of fashion because their elegance and simplicity have a timeless quality that endures as other fashions come and go. This new collection epitomizes intangible yet chic, classic style of the town-and-country sensibility. Stunning, easy-to-knit sweaters, jackets, twin sets, capes and boleros are inspired by the garments of classic designers and are brought up-to-date with contemporary yarns.

Book Description

The 24 projects in this book present a beautiful collection of chic styles ranging from a black turtleneck sweater, which can be paired with cropped pants for a classic, yet mod look, to an oversized sweater with a cowl-neck hood for the pulled- together, yet relaxed look. The unique collection also includes a glamorous lacy shawl; a short-sleeved, open-collar sweater; a sleeveless knee-length dress; a Chanel-inspired, collarless jacket with pocket embellishments; and a delicate, silvery cape for enchanting evenings out. Using a broad assortment of yarns, the signature classics are knit in sophisticated colors that complement any outfit whether formal or casual.

More About the Author

One of Britain's leading knitwear designers, her innovative combinations of texture, colour and styling have been widely influential over the years. A self-taught knitter, she has been producing her own unique collections of handknits for more than twenty years, as well as designing for Rowan Yarns and many international fashion houses such as Ralph Lauren, Laura Ashley and Benetton. She teaches in the UK and Europe and is a regular visitor to the US.

Passionate about design, Jean is an ardent maker who has always believed that good design should be available to all who appreciate it, not just the few who can afford to buy couture. With this in mind, she has written many books, the most recent being Sweet Shawlettes.

Jean has three sons, three grand-daughters and two cats and lives in York and Mid-Wales with her partner Philip Mercer. Together they host regular knitters' tours in the UK and abroad, where participants can knit along with Jean and other star designers in the relaxed atmosphere of some of the world's most beautiful cities and gardens. Music is another love and she enjoys sessions with friends and family whenever and wherever she gets the chance. She firmly believes in vegetarianism, sustainability and the power of love and laughter.

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic Silhouettes to Customize - 4 1/2 Stars - by Pat, January 20, 2008
This review is from: Contemporary Classics: 24 Elegant Knits with a Modern Twist (Paperback)
I love this book! There is an excellent range of patterns from a lacy wrap, sleeveless shells and short cardigans through to several heavy cardigan jackets that would be warm and cozy. The patterns are presented in a range of gauges from lacy to chunky, and I particularly appreciate that small sizes are included (most patterns range from 32-34 to 40-42). Also included are schematic diagrams, although I would've liked a few more breakdown measurements with these.
I am thrilled to find a book that presents nice fitted sweaters with a retro feel; the classic shapes provide a great starting point for customizing with different colours and yarns.
If you like Vintage Knits by Sarah Dallas, check this out. Most of the patterns are not terrifically complicated, but the instructions need careful reading (I find this common with most British designs).
I think that this book would be a great addition to a knitting library!

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, November 15, 2007
This review is from: Contemporary Classics: 24 Elegant Knits with a Modern Twist (Paperback)
I had high hopes for this book, but was rather disappointed. I'm not sure this anything I will actually knit and some of the patterns were decidedly frumpy and old fashioned. There are a couple with interesting features, like a boat neckline, but nothing that stands out and calls me to the knitting needles.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful lines and classic shapes, December 21, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Contemporary Classics: 24 Elegant Knits with a Modern Twist (Paperback)
I guess it depends on one's taste, but I found at least six projects that I am excited to knit from this book. I prefer simple, elegant shapes and I hate lots of color and texture, so most of the designs suited me.
