Book Description

0130893102 978-0130893109 July 6, 2001 3
This book is intended for undergraduate engineering students taking the introductory engineering economics course at the university level. The third edition of Contemporary Engineering Economics has been thoroughly revised and updated while continuing to adopt a contemporary approach to the subject, and teaching, of engineering economics. This text aims not only to build a sound and comprehensive coverage of engineering economics, but also to address key educational challenges, such as student difficulty in developing the analytical skills required to make informed financial decisions.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“The Park text is one that students can engage better because of the emphasis on personal finance issues and clear explanations of business finance issues and why and when they are requested in industry.  I find that students learn Engineering Economy much more effectively when they can relate it to their own personal situations and understand how critical these finance skills are to their personal success.”

-Dr. David Sly, PE, IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY

“I believe that it is a superior text for its purpose due to the clarity and strong examples.”

-Stephen Smith, DREXEL UNIVERSITY

“The collection of stories in the opening vignettes and its overall writing style makes the adjective “contemporary” in the title of the Park text well deserved.  I would describe this text as a textbook written with students’ interests in mind.”

-Alla Kammerdiner, ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY

Contemporary Engineering Economics provides a very good coverage of fundamental issues in engineering decision making with contemporary examples and opening cases.”

-Bahattin Koc, UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO (SUNY)

From the Back Cover

As in the first two editions, Park's Contemporary Engineering Economics, 3e stimulates student enthusiasm and imagination with the use of real-world applications and contexts throughout the book in chapter opening scenarios, homework problems, and self-test questions.

New features in the third edition:
  • All sections are updated to reflect the latest tax laws, interest rates, and other financial developments.
  • The chapters are now organized into five parts. Three new chapters (Chapters 2, 3, and 6) have been added.
  • Chapter 2 (Understanding Financial Statements) introduces the basics of business language, known as financial accounting, so that engineers can understand and speak in a common language when it comes to making a variety of business decisions.
  • Chapter 3 (Cost Concepts and Behaviors) covers the various cost definitions as well as their behaviors in decision making. In particular, it discusses the marginal concept, which is the basis for many economic decisions.
  • Chapter 6 (Principles of Investing) unravels the mysteries of the financial markets—the language, the players, the strategies, and above all, the risks and rewards of investments, as well as their ups and downs.
  • Chapter 7 (Present Worth Analysis) streamlines the principles of comparing mutually exclusive projects in detail.
  • Chapter 14 (Project Risk and Uncertainty) has been expanded to include decision tree analysis.
  • Chapter 15 (Replacement Decisions) has been divided into two parts: The first part introduces the basic replacement decision problems without considering the effects of income taxes, whereas the second part revisits the same decision problems with income tax consideration.

A comprehensive book website has been developed for study guides and additional information, as well as student and instructor resources. The section, "Computer Notes," previously appearing as an end-of-chapter feature, is now consolidated onto the website. Various spreadsheets can be downloaded from the website and opened directly in Microsoft® Excel for Windows.

4.0 out of 5 stars Strongly Recommended, October 15, 2009
This book provides a solid foundation for the practicing engineer involved with the econmic evaluation of engineering projects, an area which determines for the greater part, whether projects should be progressed or aborted. The principles are well defined and the examples are easy to follow, rightfully stimulating thinking and not substituting for it, since as we are well aware, engineering projects may vary in size, scope and complexity. I would recommend this book to any engineering student or practicing engineer. Consulting the work of other authors (eg Sullivan) would supplement understanding and appreciation of the subject matter. I gave the book a 4 star rating because of the errors within the examples provided. The principles however, are conveyed so effectively in the text that identification of these errors become easy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Information..., December 4, 2011

I know the author personally and I think the book is not bad. I took him for 2 semester and I enjoyed it, albeit tough. I know the book has gotten fairly bad reviews on multiple sites but it is written with an IE perspective. With that said, I think it is pretty good for a somewhat experienced person.
