3.0 out of 5 stars Not what it looks like - but solid food for thought, April 28, 2009

This review is from: Contemporary Interventional Ultrasonography in Urology (Hardcover)
This multi-author volume is sort of an update on current cutting edge and beyond cutting-edge (puncture robots) ultrasound technology. It does neither, as the title would suggest, limit itself to urological applications, nor to interventional use of ultrasound. All 18 chapters, however, are either interventional or urologic. The chapters are well-written, in-depth researched and all authors are knowledgeable about the topic they write on. Chapter 11 (physics on ultrasound) is a pearl of wisdom I have never seen anywhere else so far.
This, however, is where the praise ends. There is no chapter on ultrasound-guided puncture or cryosurgery of the kidney, and the text on the back side is misleading to say the least. It addresses itself to both 'the aspiring student' and the 'practicing professional' and promises 'detailed, all-inclusive reviews of every useful topic' (sic!). In fact, it does give you the rundown on all pretty advanced, some pretty fringy and in many cases non-current, future or experimental technologies that certainly haven't found their way to either your local academic centre or your own modern urology practice. The lack of percutaneous kidney access (without a robot) in a book that carries 'contemporary' in its title seems a no-no.
Conclusion: worth your time and money if you work academically or are really really 'into' urologic ultrasound.
Just the facts:
196 pages, hard-cover, high-quality binding and paper (no light reflection), 18 chapters can be read at 15-30 minutes each, very well-edited (typos, layout, textflow - all excellent). Target audience: Upper professional/ surgical specialist level (not suited for medical students).
