In this issue of Contemporary Music Review, a subject has been dealt with which many will not find remotely contemporary, and they will be right, of course, since it is something which stands outside time, as a number of contributors are at pains to define. A challenge has therefore been met, I believe, and I know of no parallel for this symposium.
