Book Description

0881335428 978-0881335422 December 1990 2nd
This book features the perspectives of eight contemporary rhetorical thinkers. These eight writers (see Table of Contents) have made and are making exciting contributions to the study of rhetoric, clearly moving rhetorical scholarship in new directions. Contemporary Perspectives on Rhetoric, 2/E offers thorough, well organized and clearly written summaries of their lives, works, ideas, and contributions. The final chapter offers general questions for exploring the rhetorical process and summarizes directions in the study of rhetoric. This book also provides summaries of each of the eight scholars' ideas about rhetoric rather than excerpts from their works (this overview should make tackling the various writings in their original form easier). It offers a holistic view of the lives and works of each of the theorists through biographical information, thereby providing a more complete understanding of their contributions to rhetoric. The book examines the work of each scholar without forcing categories or groupings around themes or areas of emphasis. There is also an impressive 90-page bibliography that lists works by and about the eight individuals.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Perspective on Contemporary Perspectives on Rhetoric, August 6, 2001
By
This review is from: Contemporary Perspectives on Rhetoric (Paperback)
The most striking element of Foss, Foss, and Trapp's Contemporary Perspectives on Rhetoric is the way in which the writers enmesh the autobiographical with the rhetorical. Rather than taking the typical approach of featuring a timeline for the development of rhetorical history, the authors begin each chapter with a detailed and fascinating narration of life experiences that shaped and constrained the voices of each theorist. Students are invited to "hear" definitions and concepts within the soundstage of each individual theorist. Rather than remaining as abstract and impersonal thinkers, the featured figures become full-fledged characters with varied and rich contextual dramas shaping their perspectives on the art and philosophy of symbolic creation. Students are encouraged to probe the styles and stratgies of each theorist; they become engaged in the exciting, "continuing conversation" known as rhetorical theory.
