Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

This wide-ranging collection of bibliographic essays is "designed to help church/synagogue librarians as well as public/college librarians assist readers in identifying" materials on religion. Coverage is highly selective, with emphasis on the best contemporary books. Faiths treated include Jainism, Sikhism, Zoroastrianism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The lengthy chapter on Islam explains its history and describes current practices. The remainder of the book treats current topics in Christianity. Essays cover feminist and Latin American liberation theologies, African American religious literature, and eco-theology. The final sections of the book discuss the theory and practice of religious education, devotional classics for church libraries, aging and religion, and sources for the establishment and management of a church library. While the emphasis here is on books, some chapters list audio and videocassettes and journals. Detailed author/title and subject indexes conclude the volume.

Religious Information Sources: A Worldwide Guide (Garland, 1992) lists a greater number of titles but is generally not annotated and is geared more to researchers. The strength of Contemporary Religious Ideas is that the best books on the topic are discussed in very readable essays. It also covers current areas of interest such as masculine spirituality and "Jews by Choice." Public and academic libraries will want to consider purchase. Sandy Whiteley
