5.0 out of 5 stars Great for principals AND teachers
In a field that is sometimes long on theory but woefully short on substance, the authors have done an impressive job of combining a useable observation tool (the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol, or SIOP) with some practical, real-life vignettes that illustrate each of the elements presented. 2.0 out of 5 stars New Book? ... Not
I ordered this book for a graduate class on Second Language Acquisition. The book was supposed to arrive new but it was used. It had been highlighted by a previous reader and was mailed in a flimsy paper envelope so that the front cover, back cover, and binding was damaged. It was not shipped in a timely manner therfore it arrived long after I expected it. I had to...

In a field that is sometimes long on theory but woefully short on substance, the authors have done an impressive job of combining a useable observation tool (the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol, or SIOP) with some practical, real-life vignettes that illustrate each of the elements presented. The SIOP goes through every step of the sheltering process, from lesson preparation through delivery and evaluation, and does it in a user-friendly fashion.

Teachers of English language learners will find descriptions of effective--and ineffective--planning and instructional strategies. Principals and other educational supervisors will find a much-needed tool for observing and coaching teachers in how to shelter content for students who are still acquiring English. A must-read for anyone training for the principalship, and a should-read, could-use for any teacher of English language learning students.

5.0 out of 5 stars A big help for studying for NBTC, February 24, 2005
This review is from: Making Content Comprehensible for English Language Learners: The SIOP Model, Second Edition (Paperback)
I bought this book to support me in my efforts to achieve National Board Certification in the area of English as a New Language. The book was very helpful in the area of breaking down lessons and presenting them in ways studnets could grasp.

5.0 out of 5 stars When they don't understand English, March 17, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Making Content Comprehensible for English Language Learners: The SIOP Model, Second Edition (Paperback)
This is a must book for anyone who has to teach a content area to students who are learning English, whose home language is other than English. It provides an excellent instrument for self-evaluation, if one is the content-area teacher. I highly recommend it to all teachers who have English language learners in their classrooms. Nowadays, that is almost ALL teachers, K-16.

5.0 out of 5 stars Multiple Order, November 7, 2011

We placed an order for 20 of these books from 20 different sources. It went seamlessly. We were able to track them and they all arrived promptly. Even though these were used books, only one of them shows signs of not being cared for in its past life. All of the rest show gentle signs of being used and quite acceptable for the price we paid. Thank you!

2.0 out of 5 stars New Book? ... Not, March 9, 2010

This review is from: Making Content Comprehensible for English Language Learners: The SIOP Model, Second Edition (Paperback)
I had to keep it because my class was starting and there was no time to order another one. The seller lied and I'm dissapointed. The content of the book itself is good but the third edition is better and more organized, I bought one three weeks into my class at the book store.

4.0 out of 5 stars The SIOP Model, Second Edition by Jana Echevarria, July 27, 2005
This review is from: Making Content Comprehensible for English Language Learners: The SIOP Model, Second Edition (Paperback)
A lot of interesting ideas are here for "scientifically researched" methods of encouraging academic appeal to ESL learners. Class plans are carefully dissected so as to reproduce a viewing of teacher as delivery agent--academic content as only one consideration--in a work place where our students', ie customers', language acquisition requires ongoing assessment, too. In this brave new world where states are being sued over extending a fair and appropriate education unto "all" (a federal mandate in case you're not in the know yet), this book offers teaching candidates a peep hole into how their in-class performances will be judged. A brief history of failures in public education from ESL perspective is backdrop and impetus that makes text pregnant for in-class planner. A must see for anyone considering a career shift as public school teacher or desiring to see the world through a teacher's eyes. Text injects its reader with politics of teaching in a state funded--federally overseen (remember "No child left behind"?)--employment domain. Are you sure this is where you want to be in your career right now? Whew.

I had purchased this book for a class, I thought at first that I would not stay with this book after class; because it was just another textbook. But to my surprise this book does have an interesting form of stating the method. As a teacher, I am always looking for things to help in my teaching technique that will benefit the students. I have to say that some of the techniques that were mention in the book are what I have been doing tll now. Only that in the book it brings more indepth information to what other forms of teaching can be applicable to ones teachings. I say it is a good reading material as handy reference for new and veteran teachers too.
