A classic- "Content..." needs to be reprinted!, August 1, 2007
This review is from: The Content of Watercolor (Paperback)
Edward Reep's "Content of Watercolor" (first edition- 1969) is one of the first serious considerations of modern watercolor. Flawed only by the choice to reproduce too many works in black and white, the book was a landmark in recognition of 20th Century watercolor masters and vanguards (of which, Reep is one), and is the only book anywhere close to being worthy of being called a university level text on watercolor for the studio artist.
"Content..." was reprinted, enlarged, and featured more works in color in the eary 80's, then sold out.
Reep's canny connectives of East and West, of the monumental virtuosity of Homer, Sargent and the English School, with serious presentment of edgy visionaries (Francis, Blake, Grosz, Bluemner, Hugo, etc.) is partnered with a number of broad investigations in aqueous media. Reep's own "chronology of change" is illuminating because it is less about the evolution of a skills base (as 90% of the studio books on watercolor are) as it is a witness to an intensive personal search for meaning.
His humor and descriptive acumen a rare surprise in such a publication, Reep condenses much into an
imminently readable adventure, and eventually, if politely, outdistances all those fairweather Sunday afternooners- and the heap of "How to make your paintings win prizes" books that are so useless.
They don't make'em like this anymore! Along with Nicolaides, Henri, Chaet, Stern only a few others, Reep joins the lost legion of artist/writers who offer the serious student a future that requires the responsibility to the legacy, as well as a challenge to cut through the BS and to engage the hard work ahead. Reep's classic sets high standards and, yet, points to the transformative power that is not media limited, but that might only come when person and medium immerse over a lifetime.
"Content", indeed.
