5.0 out of 5 stars a quick comparison of the Contigo Elite vs. the West Loop...
The Elite Travel Mug, like most of Contigo's drinking mugs, does a very good job at keeping cold drinks cold, and a good job of keeping hot drinks hot. They utilize double wall construction, and are very sturdy, leak-proof (so far), and utilize a button to open a valve that allows the liquid to flow.

I have only been using Contigo autoseal mugs for a short...

1.0 out of 5 stars A real disappointment
I am a huge fan of the Contigo line of products. I give both the autoseal water bottles and the west loop travel mugs five stars. They NEVER leak. Because of this experience, I ordered this product, the Elite Travel Mugs, thinking to get a couple of fun colors and I thought the rubber bottoms looked like a great idea. Both mugs leaked before I was through the first...

5.0 out of 5 stars a quick comparison of the Contigo Elite vs. the West Loop..., October 15, 2010
This review is from: Contigo 2-Pack Vacuum Insulated AUTOSEAL Elite Travel Mugs, Green and Blue (Kitchen)

I have only been using Contigo autoseal mugs for a short time, but I really like them. Besides the Elite Travel Mug, I also have the Contigo West Loop mug, and the Contigo Elle insulated mug. The Elle mug is made of plastic rather than metal, so this review will basically be a comparison of the Elite and the West Loop mugs, which are both primarily constructed of stainless steel.

Plastic is used in both mugs, but it doesn't seem to affect the taste of drinks. I mostly use the mug for cold drinks, and it does an excellent job of keeping liquids cold, easily lasting 6 hours or more at normal room temperature. Contigo says that their leak-proof mugs are not intended for use with carbonated drinks, but there are really no major issues with drinking soda from them. The seal locks in the gases, which causes pressure to build up, but all you need to do is push the button to release any gas before you drink. Also, boiling hot liquids are not supposed to be poured into these mugs.

The 16 ounce Elite, is marketed as a travel mug, and has rubber at the neck for easy gripping, and also at the base for a nice snug fit a vehicle cup holder. The lid is made of plastic, and screws into a plastic base at the top to the mug. It takes less than half a turn to tighten the lid, and a rubber seal inside the mug prevents leaks. The push-to-drink button is quite large, and easy to locate while driving.

The West Loop mug also holds 16 ounces, but unlike the Elite mug the bottom is constructed entirely of metal, with no rubber grip at the bottom. The all metal construction of the West Loop does a slightly better job of preventing the transfer of heat, as ice seems to melt faster in the Elite mug. The design of the lids is different, as the West Loop has a smaller pushbutton. The top of the lid of the West Loop is slightly angled, while the Elite is more flat.

I am not a coffee drinker, but some that are have reported that coffee gunk will build up inside the West Loop lid, and that it is very difficult to clean. The seal is on the inside lip of the lid, and is also kind of hard to clean as well. For the Elite, the seal is inside the mug and can be easily cleaned. The lid appears to have some parts that are not readily accessible, but may still be easier to clean than the West Loop lid.

For cold drinks, you probably can't go wrong with either mug. I use the West Loop at home, and the Elite travels with me on the drive to work. The West Loop looks a little more slick, while the Elite has a more practical appearance.

The Elite previously was sold on QVC, and seems to be retailing now only as a two pack. It's available in several color combinations (blue/green, red/grey, and raspberry/aqua). I got mine at Costco for $20, and recommend you try there first, as Costco also has coupons where you can get certain items even cheaper. The West Loop currently ranges from $14 to $20, depending on the color. My five rating is based on the product quality and the price I paid, which is much lower than Amazon's.

Both mugs leaked before I was through the first serving of coffee. It's not that they were "broken" or defective, per se. Rather, the design is not sound. Both mugs leaked from coffee that gathered at the opening from which you drink. apparently the liquid accumulates there, and it's not a whole lot, but when the autoseal closes, the drop or two is forced out and it runs down the side of the mug. I am sending them back and ordering two more of the West Loop.

I wanted to get a travel mug I could use instead of throwing away cups all the time. It will hold any medium drink from starbucks without a problem. You can put it in the dishwasher and not worry about it getting damaged.

So far it's been a very good purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVE these leak proof mugs!, August 6, 2011

I use these mugs for tea every morning. I love how hot they keep my tea, and how they don't leak. I fill one up, close it, and then press the button to let out steam pressure. If I have one closed for a while with super hot water in it, the steam does seem to find a way to leak, but this is easily avoided by letting out the steam pressure when I fill it up and drinking my tea! If my mug ends up on it's side in my work bag (full of tea) and my bag will still be nice and dry. These are worth their price if you love hot beverages and want something that won't leak if knocked over.

I've had lots of "travel mugs", but these things are far superior in every way to anything I've tried before. I'm continually amazed at how long they keep my coffee hot. I prepare my coffee at 7 am, and on occasion I've forgotten it was there until 11, and its still hot! A very impressive feat of engineering indeed.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Mug....No Leaking, May 7, 2011
This review is from: Contigo 2-Pack Vacuum Insulated AUTOSEAL Elite Travel Mugs, Green and Blue (Kitchen)
This is by far the best coffee (or whatever you want to put in it) mug I have ever owned. This will keep your coffee hot for about 3-4 hours and drinks cold for longer than that. This a very unique mug in that it is the ONLY travel mug I have ever used that will not leak...at all. I have heard that there are others...like certain starbucks ones that have a flap that seals the mug shut. This one is simple to use. You don't have to open any flap or anything like that, it works with the squeeze of a button by the same hand you are holding the mug with. Travel mugs leaking when tipped over accidently are no longer a worry. Great for people with children also...kid knocks coffee over...no leaks, no worries. I would highly reccomend this mug. The only thing that may not be great is that if you drink soda or something sticky out of it, the inside of the lid is a bit difficult to clean. It is most easily cleaned in a dishwasher.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Travel Mugs Yet, January 25, 2011

This review is from: Contigo 2-Pack Vacuum Insulated AUTOSEAL Elite Travel Mugs, Green and Blue (Kitchen)
I bought the 2 pack at Costco about 5 months ago. They were replacing 2 travel mugs, one from Starbucks and one from Target. My husband has precise qualifications for his travel mugs: They must be insulated, fit into a standard cup holder, not leak and not have a complicated opening.

This one fit the bill. It fits a good sized cup of coffee and keeps it warm. Today, I filled mine at 8:30a and I am embarrassed to say, I was still nursing it at noon and it was still on the hot side of warm.

The push button opening makes it easy to use with one hand. Other than a quick push that opens and closes it, there was no spilling what so ever. I have put both top and bottom in the dishwasher many times and am continually delighted that there is no water sound in the interior when I shake it. My last mug had water trapped in between the layers, ew.

Lastly, this fits into a regular cup holder and has a nice hand feel. I recommend these!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Spill-proof Travel Mugs., January 10, 2011

Best travel-mugs on the market. They are spill-proof! I have not had any of the problems mentioned by others regarding cleaning them - just rinse them out daily and throw them in the dishwasher once in awhile! They even keep your drinks either cold or hot longer as they retain all the vapors from your drink - so heat or cold isn't escaping like it does from every other travel mug on the market. The manufacturer claims on times is correct! I highly recommend these - even for kids in the car - as they are SPILL PROOF!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Contigo Travel Mugs, January 8, 2011
This review is from: Contigo 2-Pack Vacuum Insulated AUTOSEAL Elite Travel Mugs, Green and Blue (Kitchen)
I love these mugs. I've been using them daily for years. They are exactly what they claim to be. They keep cold beverages cold, hot beverages hot and they never leak. I'm so happy that the new models are dishwasher safe. I love them so much that I give them as gifts and recently put the as part of a "my favorite things" package of gifts. However,my recent purchase was for a gift and although the mugs were great the packaging was very damaged. It was too close to Christmas to contact the seller to get new ones so the only choice I has was to tape up the packaging and wrap up my gift. Giving something that does not look brand new is not something I like to do. I don't know if I'd buy from the same seller again.
