Absolutely perfect--for a week or two., August 15, 2009
These mugs were the answer to our prayers. reusable coffee cup, lid that worked well, stainless body, kept coffee really hot for a long time.
And then I washed the lids. And reused them, washed, reused--and within a week, my coffee developed an off-smell. The lid smelled like a locker room, and the smell would not go away. I could hear liquid in the lid, and it would not dry out.
The concept is great, and I want these mugs to work, because they're the best I've tried, but I won't buy them again. The lids are just impossible to clean thoroughly, and if you're drinking coffee daily, there's just no way to wash the tops properly. Gross.

The best mug I have ever owned, June 16, 2009
We have 8 Contigo mugs.
One is the plastic version. Avoid the plastic version unless the $10 really, really matters to you. Contigo Double Wall Plastic Tumbler with Autoseal lid, Black, Red Button. They are no where nearly as well insulated, the button is not as easy to push, are not any lighter to lift and do not hold as much.
Three are the colored SS versions. The color comes in handy to differenciate whose is whose in a family of 5, however the color chips off fairly quickly and only the non-painted SS versions still look like new. You can get differenciation by buying different color tops from gocontigo dot com. I purchased several more for differing colors and for wear and tear and no worries over breakage. This also allows throwing the tops into the dishwasher and just grabbing another top.
I purchased our first mug in order to evaluate it as a replacement to sippy cups for our 4 year old and it worked out so well that when we saw 2 packs at Costco, we quickly purchased 6 more.
I wanted to move our children away from their plastic sippy cups Playtex Baby The Insulator Spill-Proof 9 OZ Cup 4/Pk because they are not very well insulated (resulting in no ice in a very short time), they do not let out much liquid, are not very spill proof and after several hours, the water tasted of plastic.
Recently, one of our SS Contigos fell out of the car onto the parking lot pavement and the lid broke into two pieces (where the thread meets the rest of the top). I tried purchasing the plastic version (see above) hoping the lid was interchangeable or that it would be better for our 3 year old to use, but that was not the case. The lid was not interchangable and it was just as heavy and the button took even more strength to push, so now the plastic one is daddy's.
Contigo does have a line of plastic cups for kids, but again the button is harder to press and they are NOT insulated like our current Playtex Insulator Spill Proof Cups (which are NOT entirely spill proof and do not let a lot of liquid out when drinking either). A side by side test of water with 4 cubes of ice showed a dramatic loss of temperature.
I also got to say good buy to the arguments about the potential of the Nisson mugs spilling in the car.
I never drink hot liquids, so I cannot attest yet to the downside of having such a tight seal, but it is mentioned in the literature to always push the button and release the pressure difference when you first pick it up (which you really want to do for pop as well as you can get a good spray in the face if you do not). If you are prone to put 190 degree drinks into your thermos, then you will probably have to be very, very careful with drinking from these mugs for the first few hours.
I also really like that it holds a good 2 more ounces than our Nisson cups and the lever to open the cup will not accidentally open if it is tipped on its side.
The design of the area you drink from is also nice in that it less prone to dribbling (More than once I have shown up at a meeting with water or pop all over my shirt with the Nisson mugs), however the design would also probably make it a bit more difficult to sense just how hot a beverage is and let it cool before touching your lips.
I do notice a very slight change in taste, but I think it is simply due to the shape of the mouthpiece. With other designs, you can smell the liquid and sense the bubbles as it travels between the lowered spout and your lips, however with this design, it goes straight into the mouth. Since much of our sense of taste is actually our sense of smell, the raised spout design probably changes the taste slightly. If most of its use will be water, this is a non-issue.
The packaging states that the tops ARE dishwasher safe, but the SS mug is not. For the 100% plastic version both the top and the bottom are hand wash only.

Cannot Properly clean the lid, August 8, 2009
Just to put it out there, we clean our contigo mugs after everyuse, but there is a smell in the lid that won't go away. I've tried a small tooth brush to clean in the lid, but you can't get in there. we have 4 mugs and they all had this vile growth in the lid. [...]. as a coffee mug they work great, but they are a bacterial breeding ground.
