Environmentally friendly

By using this Contigo product, you're both helping the environment and also saving money by providing your child with water or juices on-the-go in a reusable container instead of buying spill-prone disposable containers.

Caring for Your Contigo

Wash the product before first use.

Rinse lid immediately after each use with warm water and spout in the open position. Remove straw for best results. With underside of lid facing up, pull up on the straw holder and valve assembly to separate from the spout.

For easy care, the Contigo Striker kid’s water bottle is top-rack dishwasher safe. If a dishwasher is not available, the lid can be soaked for 10 minutes in hot, soapy tap water and rinsed thoroughly. A Contigo brush can be used to clean the spout. Reassemble the lid prior to use. Insert valve assembly into spout, straw holder into valve assembly and straw into straw holder. Push straw up as far as possible to nest correctly into lid. The body can also be hand washed with warm water and mild detergent and then rinsed thoroughly.

Always store the product with its lid removed and the spout in the open position to allow parts to dry completely.

Not for use with hot, carbonated or pulpy beverages.

I have an obsession with water bottles at my house. I have a plethera! I have 2 kids (4 and almost 2), and they each have 4-5 water bottles each that I keep out and filled with water to drink from all day. I've used Nathan, CamelBak, Playtex, The Safe Sippy, Glass Factory, etc. I have not tried Kleen Kanteen b/c I don't like the sippy top for kids they have. My favorites up to this point for my kids are the camelbak bottles b/c of the non-leakable bite valve and the fact you can close them so the mouth piece isn't exposed all the time...and I have them in stainless steel, which they don't make for little kids anymore. :(

Anyway...I found this Contigo and decided to give it a try. I got it for my 21 month old little girl who chews EVERYTHING! Her camelbak bite valve has already had to be replaced b/c she not only chews it, she also sticks her finger in the opening and plays with it which tore and created a huge opening in it and it started leaking everywhere. Arg!

The Contigo has held up nicely after 2 months of continuous use and washing. The bite valve portion has no evidence of bite marks and she can't stick her finger down the opening so it's in perfect condition and doesn't leak at all! My little girl also loves the fact she can close and open it all by herself, which I was surprised she could do. The straw does have a tendency to fall out of the valve opening in the lid, but it doesn't happen enough to be annoying. I refill it a couple of times a day to keep fresh water in it and just push it in before I screw the lid back on. Not a big deal.

As a father with two kids, I feel like I've become a bit of an expert on water bottles by this point. We've tried them, from Nalgene sippy bottles to Camelbak "flip tops" (Eddy?) to Klean Kanteens to Polar bottles. So far, I've liked all of them, but I the Contigo Autospout edges them out. First, the flip-up action of the mouthpiece is the easiest of all of them. Even our two y.o. had it down pat in just a minute or two (learning the right spot to press to close it took a bit more time, however). The carrying handle is nice and wide, with enough room for 3-4 kid fingers or 2 adult fingers for a firmer grip. The straw assembly took a bit of finagling (sp?) to get it to the point where the bottle would close without bending the straw, but in the process I developed something of an appreciation for the design. The bottle itself has proved to be reasonably sturdy (so far) with both the cap and body having been made with a clear understanding of the need for toughness. The range of colors is great too.

Cons? Closing the spout requires a kid to press in the right spot, or they'll wind up closing the spout on top of its protective cover (which is another great addition, BTW) rather than under it. The straw also proved a bit tricky to get "right" the first time I put everything together. I think these really are only worth half a star, however, so I'm keeping the review at 5.

In the end, this is one of truest *kids* bottles I've seen. All the other bottles, while great, are ultimately kid-sized adult bottles. Nothing wrong with that, but they wind up having small things here or there that detract (small carrying handles, tricky spouts, etc). Contigo has gone the extra step to design for kids first (though it works fine for adults).

If I could give zero stars, I would. Excellent concept. Poor execution. The CLEANING of these cups is what absolutely destroys this product. Even if you ONLY use water, open up the spout, run water through it, run it through the dishwasher, leave it open to completely dry and then close it back up, you will STILL find brown/black gunk all throughout the components. On the surface, it'll look clean. I challenge any owner of these cups to pull, lift, spread apart, open up...do whatever you have to do...to look beyond the surface throughout the lid/spout and you will be absolutely repulsed by what you find.

I have purchased these on two different occasions. After the first issue with the brown/black gunk, I thought nearly a year later I'd give them another try, this time being extremely vigilant about cleaning them. Same exact result. I even decided to remove the small, round clear plastic thing that the straw pushes up against, as that is where the most visible gunk is found. Even then, there are still too many small crevices for it to build up. Under the little flap that protects the spout from dirt if dropped, there was slimy buildup. On the hard plastic and soft rubber pieces that are up against the straw opening in the lid, there was black/brown gunk. When you try to pull up the hard plastic spout (that's not removable), there is black/brown gunk where it comes through the other side of the lid. Oh, and if you try to clean and rinse under the spout and spout protector that clicks down, keep tilting the lid to get the water out. It will continue to run back under the plastic and won't completely come out. I held it upside down, and the dripping stopped. When I turned it right side up, more water would pool in the corners!
