WAR TAPES

“We call it heart-quaking doom pop,” says Neil Popkin of the sound of WAR TAPES' first full length album, THE CONTINENTAL DIVIDE, set for release on May 26, 2009, by Seattle-based indie Sarathan Records.

The foursome includes Neil Popkin (singer/rhythm guitarist, from Boston), his sister Becca Popkin (bassist, also from Boston), Matt Bennett (lead guitar, ... Read more in Amazon's War Tapes Store

Product Description

Review

War Tapes' first full-length record is one of those albums that I have been listening to over and over again ever since I got it. The Continental Divide is one of those albums that music snobs will be talking about years from now when War Tapes becomes huge. They will all claim that they heard it first, and were into the band before anyone else was.

The second track on the album, "Dreaming of You", is one of the best tracks that I have heard in a while. It is fully reminiscent of The Cure in the best way, and it has powerful vocals akin to Depeche Mode. Basically the track takes all of the awesome rock from the 80s, and mashes it together while still making it sound relevant to today's music scene.

The album maintains a very dark 80s vibe throughout the whole disc. War Tapes is able to provide this dark 80s sound while still sounding fresh which is where a lot of actual 80s acts tend to fall flat with their new albums. The band also evokes thoughts of The Killers in a few tracks.

If you have a few extra bucks for music this month, make sure you pick up War Tapes' The Continental Divide. You won't be disappointed. Also, make sure you check out the band this summer on tour with VNV Nation. -- The Rock And Roll Supershow, May 26, 2009

I saw these guys a few days ago in Boston with VNV Nation, and they (along with the other opening bands) were a very pleasant surprise to have be a part of the concert. Usually when I go to a show, I sit twiddling my thumbs and rolling my eyes during all of the opening acts, and I was more or less expecting to do the same until VNV came onstage.

I was wrong. All of the openers were great, and overall everything before VNV was almost as good, if not just as good, as VNV Nation themselves.

If you're sitting there, reading all these positive reviews but still doubting, well, don't take our word for it. [...]. And for the love of god, DON'T just judge these guys on their somewhat scene/emo appearance (unless you like that sort of thing). They are so much better than most of the garbage floating around these days.

I can't speak for the entirety of this album. I picked up the 7-track demo disc for $5 at the show, and all of those tracks are excellent. I haven't heard the rest of the album, and I really wish I had the money to buy it. But I don't, and I can't. If any of the band members read this at all, I just want you to know that as soon as I get some extra spending cash, it's going towards supporting you guys.

Trust me, doubters. For such a young, budding band, these guys are really full of a lot more talent than you expect. Their music is all very well put together and it sounds very clean and professionally done, surprisingly so for a practically unheard of band's debut album.

Oh, and just as a side note, I got to meet the bassist, Becca, and just so you all know, she's absolutely beautiful. As is this music.

Great band. Saw them live, and they made a damn fine accounting for themselves. Has influences from Smashing Pumpkins, Bravery, and old 80's alternative. Lead singer has a very recognizable, very unique voice.

On the treadmill, working those abs or walking my dog....there is a song for every mood and time. Great lyrics, a chorus that will not leave my mind and it urges me to move and dance. I received the CD as a gift and I have not stopped listening. I didn't think it was going to be "for me" but once I listened ...I was an instant fan. Buy it for yourself or give it as a gift. This band is going to stick around!!!

"The Continental Divide" by War Tapes is going to be a classic album. A complete work of art, clever lyrics, great vocals and driving guitars. Neil Popkin's vocals recall the best of Morrissey. "Dreaming of You" is a must hear track.

I recently got this album, and beyond being completely impressed with this band, I would recommend it for anyone. It's completely worth the money!

Not often an entire cd is worth listening to but War Tapes have included 11 plus bonus 12 songs that you won't fast forward.. I love the harmonies between brother and sister.. and the words are gut wrenching and honest.. I'm wearing my cd out already!!!! Get your own, you'll love it.
