I commute about 27 miles a day. I need tires that can take the broken glass and road crud in stride without flatting. I used to use Armadillo's but they were so heavy and slick in the rain. My only complaint with this tire is that its fairly thin. You are more likely to get a flat than a normal tire that has a protection layer. Of course this is expected since it is considered a race tire. Nonetheless, the first 50 miles on this tire was fustrating. I commute about 27 miles a day. I need tires that can take the broken glass and road crud in stride without flatting. I used to use Armadillo's but they were so heavy and slick in the rain. Then I used Gatorskins, which I loved.. until they stopped making them. Once my Gatorskins wore out I thought I'd save some bucks and buy some less expensive tires. Result... flat... flat... flat... flat. Ended up replacing tubes on a weekly basis. So... I sprung for this more expensive tire. It is just as good as the Gatorskin used to be. Once I put it on, I've not flatted again. Rides really smooth too. It is also relatively light and the black tire is really sticky and holds the road in the rain. I have confidence, not only that the tire won't flat on my way to work, but that even in rainy conditions, I won't be sliding on grates or road paint. Finally, a nice touch... they've included a small depression in the tire that helps you know when it is time to replace the tire. That is a helpful feature... lets you get the most from the tire without overdoing it (as I tend to do).

5.0 out of 5 stars Roadscrape, September 16, 2009
This review is from: Continental Grand Prix 4000 S Road Tire (Sports)
I did a good bit of research and narrowed my choice down to the Conti 4000 S and Vittoria Open Corsa Evo. I found a great deal on pair of Contis for much less than the Vits, so ordered the 4000 S in 700x23. I'm fairly sure the 4000 S and 4000 in black are the same tire with different graphics - but the 4000 in colors do not have the same material compound.

Over 3,000 miles on this set and still amazed by them (rotated when rear started to square). My other bikes have wider tires (28 and 30) yet the Conti GP 4000 S in 23 mm rides more smoothly (I'm 178 lb., run it at 100 psi - note that maximum pressure on bike tires means max. for 220 lb. total weight - vary the psi according to your weight+bike weight).

The 4000 S has amazing ride quality and durability on chip/seal and old broken pavement as well as new blacktop. I've hit fresh gravel (sharp edged stuff indeed), plenty of road holes, patches of broken glass, small pieces of sheet metal and who knows what else - yet can find any cuts on either tire (never seen a Michilin or Specialized pull that trick). Thankfully I no longer live in goathead country, but these tires I bet would handle goatheads as well or better than other racing/training tires.

Great traction even on wet roads. Confidence inspiring handling on mountain decents. Noticably low rolling resistance and excellent road feel compared to any clincher Specialized, Hutchinson or Michelin that I've ridden - yet the 4000 S is also more durable. How do they that?

Not tried the Vit Open Corsa or the Challenge tires, but they would make for an interesting comparison, indeed.

No flats, ever, on these tires - that's a first for me. That includes a 24 hour race on city streets in downtown Atlanta, as well as the usual suburban and country road regular rides.

I've not babied these tires in the least. If anything, my confidence in the 4000 S has caused me to push them harder than any tire I've ridden in the last 25 years. I've no logical reason to try any other tire other than my own curiosity.

They're not inexpensive, but keep an eye out and you can find a deal on a pair at times, such as Pro Bike Kit offers.

I live in Colorado and we have lots of goatheads around here. I wanted some tires that held up fairly well to punctures but didn't feel like I was running steel belts while pedaling uphill. I have been using these tires for roughly 3 seasons and am very happy with them. I noticed at first that I was still flatting with them but when I am diligent about keeping the pressure up (I run them at 115), they perform much better.

I can generally get ~7,000 miles per tire unless I roll over a hazard and get a slice (it's only happened once).

I have been hooked on Continental tires for some time now. I have the Ultra Gatorskin on my commuter and the Grand Prix 4000S on my fun bike, a Trek Madone 5.2. The way they hum when I get going is gratifying. For myself, decent speed is achievable even though they are a heavier tire. Flats are still possible, however, with the Kevlar. A thorn got me on the Trail of the Coeur d'Alene but I believe it would have punctured just about any tire. I am not a racer so weight isn't that critical for me. This tire gives me a smooth and safe ride. If anyone out there recommends a better tire, I'm all ears.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great road bike tire!, November 13, 2009

I bought these for my Trek 2200 road bike, and
they replaced the Bontrager (=Trek) original
equipment tires that I had continued to stay
with. I decided to switch because I wanted
more confidence in the tire during a high
speed turn. This particular tire is a new
variant of the Continental 4000, in that they
are using a new rubber compound, hence the
"S" designation.

I really like this tire. It has great traction,
you can even feel how tacky it is with your hand
compared to other tires. It also seems to
have lower rolling resistance, although that
is admittedly subjective and hard to measure.
From a performance and satisfaction standpoint,
these are the best tires I have ever purchased,
and I would buy them again.

The tires are "tight" and when you install
them, they don't just slip over your rims
easily. I not only experienced that, but
that's what a bike shop mechanic told me, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Over 5000 miles and still going strong, October 2, 2010

I installed these tires on my road bike on Jan. 1st 2010. It is now Oct. 1st and over 5000 miles later the tires are still going strong. I had 1 flat during that time and it was going through the Kennerdell tunnel on the Alleghany Bike Trail near Franklin, Pa. Best tires ever as far as I'm concerned.

I've been using Conti's for many years now. These 4000s tires have been on my main ride for 12 months and about 1300 miles, and no flats, nothing to do but add air... I have them on a backup bike too. I have several friends with this tire, also no flats. They're nice and sticky, good in the rain too.

Of course this is expected since it is considered a race tire. Nonetheless, the first 50 miles on this tire was fustrating. Kept getting flats from running over what I considered small objects that shouldnt penetrate a fairly protected tire. I now reserve these tires for race day and use a more protected tire for my training rides.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Touring Tires, September 10, 2009

I bought these tires after suffering through enumerable flats with a set of Michelin Pro's. I liked the Pro's for their light weight, but found that I was averaging a flat every 100 miles or so. I bought the Continentals for both me and my wife, and have been using them since the end of July. So far no flats! These tires are fairly light for a touring tire. Also, to my surprise, I found them fairly easy to mount. I would recommend them if you're looking for a general purpose touring tire.

I just upgraded from Vredestein Fortezza to these Continental GP 4000S tires for winter riding and am super impressed by the ride quality and durability so far. I ride in the Bay Area, mostly on weekends, and am confident riding with these in all conditions. I have to admit they also look pretty sweet too.
