I have been checking Amazon several times per week since I finished watching this fall. Still I got beat out of offering the first review. Kudos!
Plot: (not much is offered, so I am doing some editing from other sources, to give a better sense of what the program is about) Full credit to Wiki
""When a group of rebels convicted as terrorists escape execution by fleeing from the year 2077 to 2012, Kiera Cameron (Rachel Nichols), a future Vancouver law enforcement officer (called Protector), is involuntarily transported with them. In order to track the terrorists down and keep them from changing the past (and presumably future), Kiera joins the 2012 Vancouver Police Department and uses the skills of a young tech expert, Alec Sadler (Erik Knudsen), to both track the Liber8 agents' pasts and provide her with the necessary information and contacts to operate in the present despite her lack of official credentials."
The future of 2077 is a dystopian one in which world governments have collapsed and corporations now dominate the planet, instituting a high-surveillance, technically advanced police state and removing certain social freedoms, specifically criticism against the "Corporate Congress".""
Whenever there is a plot involving time travel the writers can go in several directions, most frequently focusing on an approach that is either comic or moralistic. Going forward in time versus going back, can also influence the direction. How many of us have had the fantasy of receiving tomorrows newspaper today or the more altruistic, righting a wrong. 2077 offers scarcities (consumable water, fresh produce, meat, etc.) that have broadened the social gaps versus 2012.Read more ›
The pilot wastes no time in getting down to business and quickly establishing the major characters and what's going on. Rachel Nicols shines as the cop from the future whose zapped back from 2077 to present day, fortunately bringing a ton of cool gadgets to keep sci-fi geeks happy and providing some unusual plot twists. Thanks to her Terminator-like Google Glasses overlay and high tech superhero suit, everyone around her looks positively low tech. Erik Knudson is excellent as the present day whizz kid who helps out our hero and Victor Webster brings chemistry as the cop sidekick.
It's actually one of the smarter shows on TV that casts the terrorists as partially sympathetic characters who have come back through time to prevent the takeover of democracy by corporations. The writers make full use of all the tricks that time travel allows, establishing characters 'then and now' and each week showing a little more about their motivations. But for all its cleverness, there are occasionally some really bad expository scenes and dialog from characters that's only there to explain the plot to the audience. The intro credits are also some of the worst on TV but thanks to my DVR I don't have to suffer though those. These minor problems aside, its well-paced and executed and about as good as gets for TV sci-fi.
