I have a mouse with a scroll wheel but the shuttle makes it a lot easier.

Without knowing the device as well as I will in, say, a month of use, I'm just taking stabs at what will and won't work with it.

Normally, you install the drivers, plug in the jog wheel, launch the particular program you are using, and away you go!

Very useful in Motion 5, where going frame by frame is an absolute must. Somewhat buggy in fcpx. Please make the beta drivers more readily downloadable for mac osx, I had to delve into the forums to find them. Without the beta drivers your mac will constantly crash.

I bought Logitech Trackman Marble Mouse a few weeks back and was dissatisfied with the lack of a scroll wheel. I bought the Shuttle Xpress primarily to function as a scroll wheel for typical use. I started using it to the left of my keyboard so I could use my right hand on the mouse. So far I couldn't be happier with it.

For many applications I use it simply as a scroll wheel, much like a typical mouse has, with the Jog being line-by-line scroll and the shuttle being fast scroll. At first I was afraid that using two hands instead of one for simple navigation would pose a problem, but the opposite has turned out to be true. By binding several of the most common keyboard tasks to the shuttle Xpress, navigation is actually faster.

The software is pretty robust. The shuttle dial has 7 increments in both directions. Each of these increments can be programmed much like a button. The Jog dial is essentially the same as a scroll wheel on a mouse. There are 5 buttons, each can be assigned as a modifier key (control, shift, etc.), a combination of keys, or a special function and this action can be repeated at specified intervals. This isn't as flexible as some macro key pads are, which often allow for timed key combinations, but it's plenty for typical applications.

For specific applications the shuttle Xpress is extremely convenient. I do a lot of simple video editing and video analysis, and being able to efficiently navigate frame-by-frame, fast forward, and rewind is amazing. Having a jog & shuttle dial is a huge improvement over the mouse and keyboard setup I normally use. It is great for recreational playback of video as well.

I was skeptical when I purchased the Shuttle, it seemed like one of those tech things you see that is a good idea, but falls short. I was quickly proven wrong. I use my machine at home for freelance work supplementing my income, so my mind is on cutting costs as much as possible. This was well worth it. It has a software bundle that allows you to assign buttons to whatever your hearts desire, along with a drop down menu for most of the popular software bundles out there. Straight out of the box it is functional, but since every person has different work habits and quirks, modifying the buttons was easy and then you can save your custom template. I went ahead and took the time to set it up for all my programs and now just have to hit the task bar to swap settings. The only cons I have found thus far working with this device is sometimes losing my hand placement when typing, and sometimes putting the wrong profile which in the future would like a auto detect and load your settings automatically.

I'm digitizing some footage that requires just minimal editing in Sony Vegas 11, so I decided the ShuttleXpress would fit the bill for me (not needing more than the 5 hotkeys this unit provides).

When setting up the buttons for Vegas 11, I noticed that only previous versions were predefined. No problem, I went through the steps to setup the buttons for Vegas 11, which requires you to navigate to the .exe file that you will be running for the program you're setting up. I followed the steps, but when I tried my hotkeys in Vegas, they did not work (or responded differently than what I had programmed). It took me awhile to figure out; it turns out that the software was reading Vegas 11 as Vegas 6.0 and was using those predefined key sets. If I right-clicked the contour software in the system tray, there were two key sets available: Vegas 6.0, and my custom set. I selected the custom set that I made, and everything worked perfectly.

Until I tabbed out of the program and came back to it. The contour software defaulted back to the "Vegas 6.0" settings. I have been unable to figure out how to set the software to my custom set, so instead I edited the Vegas 6.0 set to my custom settings.

Now that that's done, everything works fine and my workflow is much easier to manage and I'm flying through these simple edits.

About the unit itself (instead of the software): the jog/shuttle wheel is responsive and easy to find the desired scrub speed. The three middle buttons do have recesses in them to help you to know where you're at without looking. Overall, this small footprint unit feels pretty solid for it's size.

I have had a Contour ShuttleXpress for years, using it with NLEs (usually Vegas, but also MSP and others,) and love it. It is a joy to use, and it takes me back to the old linear days when I was actually working in the television industry, rather than dabbling as a hobby.
My brother uses DAWs like Steinburg CuBase,so I got this as a gift for him. The price was very good, and the item was received in great condition very quickly.
The only potential frustration to the device is having to configure the key bindings for the particular program you are using, but most major programs already have a profile included in the drivers for the device. Normally, you install the drivers, plug in the jog wheel, launch the particular program you are using, and away you go!
