NES's Version of Rainbow Six.....Kinda...,

Hey guys/gals/gamers,
Contra Force---I gotta admit, I didn't even know this game existed...Probably because it was released so close to the SNES release. In short, I had my SNES and hardly cared about new games for NES like many other kid-gamers out there. Anyways, this game is your basic simultaneous player-tactical game, with original characters Mad Dog & Scorpion and 2 new other characters to play with. I thought the game held up to the high standards set by Konami gamemakers, BUT, the main disappointment I hold with this game is that the gameplay SSSSLLLLOOOWWWSS...Almost to a screeching-halt sometimes and when it repeats, you get filled with rage and yet, excitement at the same time because you just want to play through the game, conquer it, so you can brag to all your friends that you just beat the most unknown Contra game in existence!! Overall, 4 stars.

This is Contra in name only (the title...I'm referring to the apparent title this game would've taken had the game been released in Japan). Creating realistic cityscapes and settings has always been a devil of a task on the NES and is often done at the expense of onscreen action; it forces the designer to add a great deal of familiar stuff, more than, say, a jungle. Konami decided to have both action and tons of graphics, it just doesn't work. This game deserves points for trying to push the NES with lots of unique graphics; however, it does not win a cookie for having tons of slowdown, an obtuse weapon system (you collect suitcases and switch between guns, and...yeah), and a great deal of clutter. The game takes place in the present day (you know because there's vans, aircraft carriers, and somebody's daughter has been kidnapped - nobody ever gets kidnapped in the future after all), with an odd-looking band of guys (heroes?) who run about and shoot stuff in pursuit of a bad guy they apparently never catch (whoops). Konami should've known better. That said, it's not a truly awful game - just badly stunted.

Old School Fun,

One of the first shooting games ever and has great graphics for a NES game. The only problem is on multiplayer when one person get to far behind the ohter player can't move and gets his/her guts pumped full of lead. The story line is kinda lame but it makes up for that with-gulp-fun boss battles. The controller set up is good....

A let down of a return,

This is the game no one knew about and wanted to know about, as the soldiers from the original Contra are back for another similtaneous two player side scrolling shooting adventure battling against an alien assult on earth. The game is as difficult as ever, because when you get hit by an enemy you die. The challenge is nice with new challenges from the original game from aliens, armies, tanks and killer machines. The big let down of the game is the graphics and the gameplay are very poor especially compared to the original Contra. Also this game is very dated. There is not much to say about this game, other than skip it!
